Chemitox Launches Comprehensive Prototyping Service for Perovskite Solar Cells

Chemitox Co., Ltd., headquartered in Ota City, Tokyo, has officially launched its prototyping service for perovskite solar cells. This innovative service covers everything from prototyping to testing, making it a significant contribution to the renewable energy sector in Japan.

Perovskite solar cells are garnering attention as the next-generation solar technology. Compared to traditional crystalline silicon solar cells, perovskite cells are not only lightweight and flexible but also capable of generating sufficient voltage even in low indoor light conditions. This unique feature enables their application on curved surfaces and in indoor settings where silicon cells would typically fail. Additionally, most materials, like iodine, essential for their production can be sourced domestically, providing an advantage over conventional silicon cells.

Despite their promise, perovskite solar cells have not yet made it to the market. Although research has shown efficiencies exceeding 26%, challenges such as durability, scalability, quality assurance, and cost reduction remain. In addressing these issues, Chemitox started using inkjet printers and spin-coating techniques in 2022, in collaboration with Professor Koji Segawa from the University of Tokyo, a leading figure in perovskite solar cell research. As a result, Chemitox is now capable of producing reproducible samples with an average efficiency of 19.7%.

The construction of perovskite solar cells requires multiple components, including semiconductors, encapsulants, barrier films, and weatherproof layers, all of which are designed to maximize the advantages of low weight, flexibility, and aesthetics. Thus, developing evaluation modules that consistently utilize these materials becomes a significant challenge.

Chemitox offers a one-stop service that encompasses device prototyping and subsequent testing. This service allows various material manufacturers to substitute target materials and produce perovskite solar cell units for comparative evaluation. This service can serve as a valuable marketing tool for companies considering entry into this burgeoning market.

In addition, Chemitox has introduced an LED steady-state solar simulator along with an I-V tester suited for measuring perovskite solar cells. To ensure measurements reflect real-world conditions, a solar simulator closely approximating sunlight behavior is essential. The newly added simulator is the first of its kind in testing institutions, combining several emitting wavelengths from LEDs, delivering unprecedented sunlight approximation. With a maximum irradiation area of 500 mm x 500 mm rated at class ACA and a center area of 300 mm x 300 mm rated at class AAA according to IEC60904-9 (2020), the simulator meets exceptional standards.

The company leverages its past experience in the durability testing of crystalline silicon solar cells to conduct long-term degradation tests on perovskite solar cells under light exposure.

Moreover, a state-of-the-art I-V tester compatible with up to 100V has also been adopted, enabling MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) measurements on series modules.

Through these services, Chemitox aims to significantly contribute to the growth of the perovskite solar cell industry in Japan.
