LanzaJet and KazMunayGas Reach Major Milestone in Sustainable Aviation Fuel Project in Kazakhstan

LanzaJet, Inc., a prominent innovator in next-generation fuel solutions, has announced a significant development in the realm of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in Kazakhstan. On September 25, 2025, during New York Climate Week, LanzaJet’s CEO, Jimmy Samartzis, met with Kazakhstan’s President, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, and the head of KazMunayGas (KMG), Askhat Khasenov. Together, they signed an agreement that propels Kazakhstan towards its first sustainable aviation fuel project, marking a remarkable milestone in the country's journey towards decarbonizing the aviation sector.

The partnership follows the completion of a joint feasibility study, allowing KMG and LanzaJet to transition to the next phase of project development: Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED). This crucial step aims to finalize all necessary technical and economic solutions for the construction of the SAF facility.

Jimmy Samartzis expressed optimism about the venture, stating, "Kazakhstan offers remarkable potential across various sectors including agriculture, logistics, oil and gas, and aviation. Our collaboration with KMG is poised to enhance regional leadership in carbon-reduced flights, boost the economic development of Kazakhstan, and ensure energy security in the region."

Askhat Khassenov emphasized the project's importance for enhancing bilateral cooperation. He noted, "This collaboration is a critical step toward fostering our goals for low-carbon development and adopting cutting-edge technologies. Overall, it will positively impact the growth of the biofuel market and improve the environmental footprint of the aviation sector while amplifying Kazakhstan’s transit potential."

Following the signing of the agreement, work on the project is set to begin immediately. By 2030, the anticipated demand for SAF in Kazakhstan is projected to reach 70,000 tons annually, underscoring the project’s relevance and urgency.
