Pure DC Pioneers Biomethane Use in Data Centers with Successful Pilot in Europe

Pure DC Leads the Way in Renewable Energy with Biomethane

In a groundbreaking achievement for the European data center industry, Pure Data Centres Group (Pure DC) has completed the first successful proof of concept (PoC) for biomethane use at its Dublin campus. This pilot project marks a significant stride toward sustainability, enabling the company to achieve 100% decarbonisation of its natural gas consumption throughout 2025.

The innovative project involves matching every unit of natural gas consumed by the data center with an equivalent amount of renewable biomethane. This was accomplished through the use of independently certified gas attributes, following strict Irish and European accounting standards. By utilizing the Irish Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin (RGGOs) and European Biomethane Guarantees of Origin (GOs), Pure DC could ensure transparency and traceability in its gas sourcing strategy. The company retired these certificates on a megawatt-hour basis to reconcile its gas usage, adhering to comprehensive sustainability requirements and contributing to certified decarbonization frameworks.

The successful implementation of the biomethane PoC aligns perfectly with Ireland's policy on data centers and emissions reduction, which emphasizes transparency while advocating for a gradual transition away from fossil fuels. This project acknowledges the role of renewable gases as crucial transitional solutions, especially when the deployment of grid-based renewable energy sources could be limited in the short term. The initiative also supports Ireland's National Biomethane Strategy, which aims to promote sustainable biomethane production while bolstering demand for renewable gas within the broader economy.

In terms of sustainability metrics, Pure DC also plays a role in influencing market dynamics that will invigorate Ireland's renewable gas sector. By sourcing certified biomethane attributes connected to actual gas network injections, the company hopes to enhance local market demand and stimulate the growth of the domestic renewable gas market, ultimately reducing operational emissions.

Although Pure DC celebrates this achievement, it recognizes that the use of renewable gas is only a temporary measure rather than the ultimate goal. The company is currently assessing Biomethane Purchase Agreements (BPAs) and evaluating ongoing imports of EU biomethane to ensure a stable supply for its operations and to further the development of local renewable gas markets.

In addition to this immediate initiative, Pure DC is also working on long-term strategies that comply with Ireland's Large Energy User policy and Climate Action Plan. These strategies include integrating local renewable energy projects, managing demand-side energy usage, implementing energy storage solutions, and adopting advanced energy efficiency measures to further lower emissions.

Located in the fiber-rich Ballycoolin area of Dublin, the DUB01 campus has been operational since 2024 and accommodates high-density workloads, featuring state-of-the-art cooling and power infrastructure. The site is designed to deliver a staggering 54MW across three data centers and has the potential for future capacity expansion.

On top of its commitments to renewable energy, Pure DC integrates sustainable practices throughout its operations. Landscaping techniques such as using biochar help reduce water consumption, and the facility has adopted Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) for backup and primary power generation in short-term scenarios. This extensive onsite energy infrastructure is engineered to ensure operational resilience.

Moreover, the design allows for potential heat exports to district heating networks, providing local communities and businesses with additional benefits. This aligns with Pure DC's commitment to sustainable practices and responsible energy usage, ensuring the company plays a proactive role in the ongoing evolution of the renewable energy landscape in Ireland.

In summary, Pure DC's successful biomethane proof of concept stands as a testament to the company's commitment to sustainability and innovation within the data center industry. As the global demand for energy-efficient and environmentally friendly data solutions grows, Pure DC is positioning itself at the forefront of this green revolution in technology.
