Celebrating 70 Years: Special Concerts by the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra

Japan Philharmonic Orchestra's 70th Anniversary Concert Series

The Japan Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO), a prestigious entity in the classical music scene, is gearing up for a grand celebration of its 70th anniversary season. On June 18, 2026, the orchestra will release special membership tickets for its autumn-winter series, which promises to be an exhilarating experience for concertgoers.

The concert season will feature many esteemed maestros who have collaborated with the JPO over the years. Kicking off the Tokyo series in October is renowned conductor Kazuki Yamada, who has had great success with the Berlin Philharmonic. His leadership during this concert will add a traditional touch to the orchestra's 70th-anniversary celebration.

Following Yamada's performance, celebrated conductor Kenichiro Kobayashi will take to the podium in November, bringing to life Smetana's symphonic poem Město, which draws deeply from the rich culture and tumultuous history of Eastern Europe.

In December, two rising stars, Nodoka Okisawa and Tomoki Sakata, will challenge themselves with Reger's complex works, inviting audiences into a new chapter of the Japanese music scene. The season will continue into January with principal conductor Katchung Wong leading a performance of Bruckner's monumental 8th Symphony, while Pietari Inkinen, the former principal conductor, will bring audiences Beethoven's Emperor Concerto and Strauss's Ein Heldenleben in March.

The Yokohama series will also feature an enticing selection of popular pieces, providing a more accessible program. In October, Kobayashi will conduct Beethoven's 7th Symphony, while the orchestra's end-of-year tradition, the Ninth Symphony, will be conducted by Tetsuro Saka in December. Also notable is Wong's collaboration with the organist Lucy for Saint-Saëns’s Organ Symphony in November.

This commemorative season is not only about orchestral works; it will also spotlight talented soloists from the JPO, including its principal players. Distinguished pianist Sir Stephen Hough and the rising trumpet star Hayato Kodama will grace the stage, ensuring that this anniversary season is a memorable one.

With so much talent and passion on display, audiences can look forward to a fantastic concert series that promises to pay homage to the rich history of the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra while paving the way for its future. Plan to secure your membership tickets when they go on sale this June to not miss out on this extraordinary celebration!
