Tecnimont Awarded Major Contract for Fertilizer Complex in Argentina

Tecnimont, a subsidiary of the Maire Group, has made a significant breakthrough by securing a contract from Fértil Pampa S.A.U. to design, procure, and oversee the commissioning of a large-scale fertilizer complex in Argentina. This project, valued at approximately €1.3 billion, includes state-of-the-art technologies aimed at enhancing the agricultural sector in the region.

Project Overview

The fertilizer complex, located within the Bahía Blanca industrial area in the Buenos Aires province, is set to become the largest urea production facility in Latin America. With a total capacity of 2.1 million tons of granulated urea per year, it will feature a major ammonia plant and two ultra-low-energy urea production lines, each equipped with its own granulating facility to enhance efficiency in production.

Covering an expansive 80 hectares, the site is well-positioned adjacent to existing power generation plants and is strategically linked to key infrastructures, including gas pipelines, electricity lines, and a deep water export port. Such advantageous logistics are crucial for the successful operation and distribution of the final product.

Tecnimont's role encompasses various critical functions, including project planning, procurement, commissioning, and startup processes. The complex will leverage Nextchem's market-leading licensed technologies for urea melting and granulation, supported by their comprehensive Process Design Package. Additionally, KT Tech will provide the primary reformer needed for syngas production, while KBR will supply the ammonia technology, ensuring that the facility operates with cutting-edge methods.
