VIAVI Unveils Advanced RSR Transcoder for Navigation Assurance in GPS-Denied Conditions

VIAVI Unveils Second Generation RSR Transcoder

On May 28, 2025, VIAVI Solutions Inc. (NASDAQ: VIAV) proudly launched its second-generation RSR Transcoder, specifically engineered to support operations in environments where GPS and GNSS signals are unavailable or compromised. This innovative technology aims to bolster operational capabilities amidst the rising threats of electronic warfare, where GPS jamming and spoofing have become more commonplace.

The Need for Navigation Resilience

Intrusions on GPS signals have become a significant issue for various sectors that depend on accurate timing and geolocation—particularly military operations, aviation, and emergency services. The ability of adversaries to disrupt these technologies poses a growing challenge, elevating the need for reliable navigation solutions that function effectively in degraded or denied environments.

Key Features of the RSR Transcoder

The second-generation RSR Transcoder is adept at delivering assured Position, Navigation, and Timing (PNT). Among its impressive features is the capability to upgrade legacy systems effectively.

1. GPS Full Constellation Simulator: This feature allows for a comprehensive simulation of GPS satellite signals to ensure accurate navigation outputs.
2. Patented Algorithm: The transcoder employs a unique algorithm that can quickly convert assured inputs—such as M-code, SAASM, IMU/INS, and other signals—into usable Universal GPS L1 and L2 signals. This ensures that older systems are not left behind in terms of tech relevance.
3. Output Flexibility: The device provides outputs at 100 Hz, which are structured to produce both C/A-code and P-code signals, making it easier for operators to enhance legacy GPS units with modern PNT capabilities.
4. Robust Design: Built within ruggedized IP68 enclosures, the RSR Transcoder is mountable across various platforms—land, sea, and air. Moreover, it operates in a covert lights-out mode, making it especially suitable for sensitive military operations.

Adaptive Legacy System Integration

As military and commercial systems increasingly rely on PNT technologies, the RSR Transcoder's ability to adaptively retrofit old equipment proves beneficial. Doug Rusell, Senior Vice President of Aerospace and Defense at VIAVI, emphasized the urgency of this technology, stating, "Modern military systems are heavily reliant on PNT technologies, but advances are enabling adversaries to jam and spoof GNSS, forcing operators to tackle these challenges in GPS-deprived environments."

Demonstration at the Joint Navigation Conference

The RSR Transcoder will be showcased at the upcoming Joint Navigation Conference from June 2-5, 2025, in the Greater Cincinnati Area, under the collaborative auspices of the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security. VIAVI will present its cutting-edge technology at booth #406, while also demonstrating recent innovations in navigation solutions designed for degraded environments at booth #430.

In addition to the display, VIAVI will lead three crucial discussions addressing advancements in aerospace navigation, such as:
  • - "3D Vision-Based Positioning for Autonomous Aerial Platform Navigation and Human-in-the-Loop Reconnaissance Mission"
  • - "Anti-Jam/Spoof Phased Array Antenna"
  • - "Retrofitting At-Risk GPS Defense Equipment with a Multi-Orbit LEO and GEO Clock System for Resilient PNT Services"
