Consumers Embrace Second-Hand Shopping, Boosting Circular Economy Trends in 2025

In a significant shift towards sustainability, eBay Inc. has unveiled its first annual Resale Report for 2025, revealing that a remarkable 89% of surveyed global consumers are planning to either maintain or increase their spending on second-hand goods compared to the previous year. This insight underscores a notable trend towards the circular economy, where the resale market is no longer merely seen as a niche segment but as a mainstream choice for millions. The report, which gathered insights from over 27,000 participants—including eBay sellers and general consumers—indicates that buying second-hand items has evolved into a lifestyle choice informed by personal values, community connections, and financial empowerment.

Jamie Iannone, CEO of eBay, states, "The resale movement is defining how people shop, led by a new generation that values connection, purpose, and sustainability." With approximately 80% of Generation Z and millennials identifying themselves as part of this movement, the passion for second-hand items is turning into tangible impacts on both the economy and the environment. eBay, being at the forefront of this transition, is leveraging advancements in artificial intelligence to facilitate the reuse of products, positioning itself as a critical player in the push for sustainability.

Younger Generations Driving Resale Growth

As per the findings, younger generations are significantly influencing the resale trend, with 59% of surveyed Generation Z and 56% of millennials asserting plans to boost their expenditure on second-hand items this year. Over one-third (35%) of consumers reported purchasing second-hand goods on a monthly basis or more often, highlighting the deep integration of resale into everyday shopping habits. "The resale sector has transformed into a purpose-driven global movement," asserts Renee Morin, eBay's Director of Sustainability. Today's consumers are not merely seeking value but are also motivated by sustainable choices that positively impact both people and the planet.

Practical and Meaningful Reasons Behind Second-Hand Purchases

Consumers adopting the resale model cite several practical and meaningful reasons for their choices. According to the report, saving money is among the top three motivations for purchasing second-hand items, with 81% of participants prioritizing financial savings. Furthermore, environmental sustainability concerns rank high as well, with 45% mentioning it as a key reason. Other major factors driving second-hand purchases include finding specific items that are not available as new (37%), searching for unique or collectible pieces (36%), and a general aversion to fast fashion (17%). This shift not only signifies financial intelligence among consumers but also reflects values of individuality and conscious consumption.

Building Community through Resale

The resale market fosters meaningful connections between buyers and sellers. The report shows that 63% of consumers consider themselves part of a resale community—a figure that rises to nearly 80% among Gen Z and millennials. The thrill of the hunt for second-hand treasures is enjoyed by 65% of users, while 56% believe that buying these items allows them to express their personal style. For sellers, particularly those dealing in collectibles, the primary motivator is often passion. Categories such as trading cards (45%), collectible items (37%), and antiques (35%) illustrate a community spirit where shared enthusiasm for particular items creates vibrant interactions.

Economic Empowerment through Resale

In an era marked by economic uncertainty, the resale sector presents financial relief and opportunities. An impressive 81% of consumers express satisfaction in saving money through second-hand shopping, while 86% of eBay sellers generate inventory from their personal belongings to convert unused items into income. As the resale market continues to expand globally, eBay remains committed to creating economic opportunities for everyone and fostering a community of enthusiasts worldwide. The 2025 Resale Report emphasizes that conscious consumption, economic empowerment, and community connections are shaping the future of shopping, positioning eBay as a trustworthy leader nurturing sustainable growth, supporting sellers, and inspiring the new generation of enthusiasts.
