MGI Tech Marks a Decade of Groundbreaking Innovations in Life Sciences

Celebrating a Decade of Innovation

MGI Tech Co., Ltd. (commonly known as MGI) has officially marked its 10th anniversary, celebrating a decade dedicated to advancing life sciences through cutting-edge technology and innovation. Founded in 2016, the company started with a mission to overcome traditional barriers in genomics, including accessibility, scalability, and affordability.

Transforming Genomics

Since its inception, MGI has continuously aimed to make genomic research more accessible. With over 3,560 active users and 5,300 installations worldwide, MGI has contributed significantly, supporting 18,009 peer-reviewed publications up until now. The firm’s efforts have transformed genomics from elitist, specialized processes to universally deployable systems suitable for diverse applications in medicine, agriculture, and environmental science.

A Solid Foundation

Initially, genomic sequencing technologies were bulky and expensive, often limited to well-funded research institutions. To address these challenges, MGI developed platforms like the G400 and G50, paving the way for streamlined workflows which enabled broader use. The introduction of the T7 sequencer in 2018 took productivity to new heights, facilitating the sequencing of up to 60 human genomes per day.

By 2022, MGI launched its first sequencer based on self-luminous technology – the E25 – alongside the compact G99 platform, which showed adaptability even under extreme conditions, such as those found on Mount Everest. In 2023, MGI introduced the T20×2, enabling whole-genome sequencing costs to drop below $100, a significant milestone in genomic economics.

Future of Intelligent Laboratories

As life sciences transition into the realm of multi-omics, MGI is positioning itself to lead the way in intelligent laboratory technologies. Their automation platforms, including SP-960 and SP-Smart8, have revolutionized workflows by minimizing manual variability and maximizing efficiency.

Furthermore, the DNBelab C Series allows high-resolution single-cell analysis, essential for understanding complex biological systems at the cellular level. These advancements reflect a broader shift towards utilizing AI for streamlined research protocols, enhancing both speed and precision.

Integrated Research Solutions

Recognizing that modern genomic challenges require a multifaceted approach, MGI has expanded its toolkit to include a variety of sequencing methodologies. Their acquisitions of STOmics and CycloneSEQ cement MGI's status as a leader in offering integrated short-read, long-read, and spatial transcriptomic solutions, which together help to capture detailed biological data across numerous dimensions.

This comprehensive strategy involves the analysis of:
  • - DNA: Unraveling genetic information
  • - Cell Omics: Investigating biological functions at the single-cell level
  • - Spatial Omics: Mapping molecular functions within tissues
  • - Proteomics: Understanding the dynamics of protein interactions

Transitioning to AI-Driven Solutions

With AI increasingly shaping the future of biotechnology, MGI is advancing towards modular, programmable architectures that enhance research capabilities. The G400RS FluoXpert Vision facilitates sophisticated single-cell spatial analysis, harnessing the power of AI to analyze complex datasets and streamline workflows.

This trend towards intelligent systems tailored for researchers signifies a shift from simply crunching numbers to providing contextualized biological insights.

A Vision for the Future

In reflection, Duncan Yu, the President of MGI, emphasized, "Over the past decade, genomics has transitioned from a specialized capability to a foundational scientific infrastructure.” MGI is committed to building open and intelligent systems to ensure ongoing accessibility, supporting sustainable precision medicine across the globe.

As we look to the future, MGI envisions a world where the cost of whole-genome sequencing drops to just $10, reshaping the landscape of preventive healthcare, population health, and environmental monitoring. With its innovative spirit and commitment to advancing life sciences, MGI Tech is poised to lead in the next chapters of scientific discovery and global health improvements.
