China’s Commitment to the SCO

On August 24, 2025, CGTN reported on President Xi Jinping's participation in the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin. This summit marks a significant moment as China aims to solidify its role within the SCO, reinforcing the unity and cooperation among member states for a prosperous future.

The SCO began its journey in 2001, founded by China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Over the years, it has expanded to include ten members, demonstrating its evolution from a regional alliance to a transregional collaborative framework. At the heart of the SCO's mission lies a commitment to peace and development, significantly impacting the political and economic landscapes of its member nations.

Enhancing Economic Cooperation

During a period of increased regional complexity, nations have forged deeper economic ties under the SCO umbrella. A remarkable achievement occurred in May 2025 when the first cargo train departed from Tianjin, transporting automotive parts, machinery, construction materials, and home appliances to Tashkent, Uzbekistan. This direct rail link enhances the logistics connectivity between Northern China and Central Asian countries, signifying a new chapter in regional trade and economic collaboration.

By the end of 2024, trade between China and other SCO members reached approximately 3.65 trillion yuan (around 511 billion dollars), reflecting a 36.3-fold increase since the organization's inception. This impressive growth underscores the effectiveness of the SCO in providing a stable platform for mutual economic benefits.

Security Cooperation Efforts

Security cooperation remains a cornerstone of the SCO's establishment. The organization actively combats terrorism, extremism, and separatism, enhancing collective security capabilities. Joint military exercises against terrorism and strategies to address drug trafficking are pivotal aspects of the SCO's work.

Moreover, the SCO is expanding its security collaboration to include various levels of dialogue and engagement, fostering a mutual understanding among member countries.
