PowerX Partners with Montenegro's EPCG for Strategic Battery Storage Initiative

Strategic Energy Partnership between PowerX and EPCG

On May 7, 2026, PowerX, Inc., headquartered in Tamano City, Okayama Prefecture, Japan, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Electroprivreda Crne Gore AD Nikšić (EPCG), Montenegro’s national electric utility company. This collaboration aims to develop battery energy storage systems (BESS) that will significantly enhance renewable energy integration and grid stability in Montenegro.

The MOU outlines an indicative target of around 500 MWh capacity of BESS over an initial three-year period, reflecting Montenegro's commitment to modernizing its energy infrastructure. This initiative aligns perfectly with Montenegro's National Energy and Climate Plan adopted in December 2025, which envisions that at least 50% of its final energy consumption will come from renewable sources by 2030. EPCG, as the country’s largest electricity producer, recognizes the vital role of BESS in this transition and modernization effort.

Both companies will collaborate to optimize the deployment of BESS, addressing crucial aspects such as grid reliability, demand peak reduction, and frequency regulation. PowerX is also exploring the feasibility of establishing local BESS assembly capabilities in Montenegro, contributing to the country’s economic development.

Montenegro's candidate status for EU membership and its electrical interconnection with Italy present a strategic opportunity for clean energy infrastructure development in Europe. PowerX aims to leverage this partnership as a stepping stone to expand its BESS business into the European market.

Masahiro Ito, CEO of PowerX, emphasized that "battery energy storage systems are becoming fundamental components of modern energy infrastructure, enabling greater renewable energy integration while enhancing the stability, flexibility, and resilience of the grid." He expressed his enthusiasm about partnering with EPCG to support Montenegro's energy transition and electrical system modernization. This strategic collaboration aims not only to implement advanced battery storage solutions but also to establish a long-term footprint for PowerX in Montenegro and the broader region, including local battery assembly capabilities.

EPCG’s CEO, Zdravko Dragaš, remarked on the significance of this collaboration, stating, "This partnership marks a significant step towards modernizing our electric system and reaffirms EPCG's commitment to an energy transition based on innovation and sustainability." He highlighted that partnering with PowerX grants access to advanced energy storage technologies essential for the stable integration of renewable energy and long-term energy security for Montenegro.
