Support Young Challenges: Kitakyushu's Cheer Box Initiative for Generation Z

Empowering Youth in Kitakyushu: The Cheer Box Initiative

In an innovative step aimed at supporting the aspirations of young individuals, Kitakyushu City, in collaboration with Minna no Ginko bank, launched the "Kitakyushu Z Generation Cheer Box" on June 1, 2026. Within just nine days of its inception, the initiative has already garnered over 45.23 million yen. This program is designed to create a platform for youth to realize their dreams and contribute positively to their communities.

A Closer Look at Cheer Box

The Cheer Box initiative allows users to deposit money into a specially designated account. For every deposit made, Minna no Ginko commits to donating 1% of the total deposit balance to the Z Generation department of Kitakyushu City. This funding specifically goes toward the "Z Generation Out-of-the-Box Contest", which supports creative projects proposed by the youth of Kitakyushu.

The motivation behind this initiative stems from a desire to establish Kitakyushu as the city that offers the strongest support for its young population. The Z Generation department was introduced as a pioneering measure to engage the youth effectively. As expressed by the officials, the aim is to simplify the process through which community members can assist the younger generation by encouraging participation via everyday actions like banking.

Current Status and Previous Achievements

As of June 9, 2026, the accumulated balance of the Cheer Box reached an impressive 45.23 million yen due to the generous contributions of numerous supporters. In comparison, last year's iteration of the Cheer Box program ended with a total balance of approximately 122 million yen, resulting in a support fund of 871,407 yen. These funds played a crucial role in promoting various youth-led projects that had been selected during the contest.

Projects Benefiting from the Support

1. Mogutto Oshi Katsu Daisyo de GO!: This initiative revitalizes the culture of the Ko-Kura Kita area, using local dining establishments as a focus. By creating trading cards that feature these restaurants as ‘favorites’, the project fosters a unique culinary experience for the community.

2. Ajiwau Kitakyushu: This project aims to showcase the city’s culinary diversity from the perspective of Generation Z. A dedicated website has been launched to compile vegan and vegetarian options within Kitakyushu, ensuring travelers with dietary restrictions can plan their visits with confidence.

3. Kitakyushu × Lingerie Collaboration: This initiative blends the traditional craftsmanship of Kitakyushu with the elegance of lingerie design, aiming to create a fresh image of the city’s manufacturing sector.

Voices from the Z Generation Department

A representative from the Z Generation department shared insights on the initiative, stating, "Many people wish to support youth but often find it challenging to know how. Our goal is to create a simple and approachable system that allows anyone to express their desire to support youth through straightforward actions like deposits."

Conclusion

The challenges faced by young individuals today are intricately linked to the future of their communities. Kitakyushu City continues to strive towards being a place where youth are supported not only by governmental efforts but also via partnerships with private enterprises and enthusiastic citizens. Together, they aim to cultivate the city into Japan’s leading supporter of young talent and innovation.
