Historic Milestone at Jiahui International Cancer Center as First International Patient Starts CAR-T Therapy
Groundbreaking Milestone in Cancer Treatment
On July 6, 2026, the Jiahui International Cancer Center (JICC) made history by treating the world's first international patient with Satri-cel, the first CAR-T therapy approved for solid tumors. This momentous event signifies a major step forward in the availability of cutting-edge oncology treatments in China, aiming to broaden global access to innovative cancer therapies.
The patient, a 59-year-old man named Josh from New Zealand, arrived in Shanghai after finding himself running out of effective treatment options for his advanced gastroduodenal cancer. After undergoing biomarker testing, it was confirmed that he was Claudin 18.2 positive and HER2 negative, making him eligible for the revolutionary Satri-cel treatment, available exclusively in China at this stage.
After an in-depth evaluation and treatment strategy formulation at JICC, Josh successfully completed the leukapheresis procedure—an essential step in the CAR-T process. His CAR-T cells are currently being manufactured, with hopes to reinfuse them within the next few weeks.
The approval of Satri-cel represents a significant leap in cellular immunotherapy, positioning China as a key player in the global oncology sector. In line with this, JICC has already treated CAR-T patients from various regions, demonstrating its growing role as a healthcare destination for international individuals seeking state-of-the-art cancer treatments.
Dr. Linli Xuan, Chief of Medical Oncology at JICC, commented, "The approval of Satri-cel marks a pivotal achievement not only for individuals battling advanced gastric cancer but also for the future landscape of oncology on a global scale. It is a privilege to be the chosen center for such an important treatment for the first international patient. As innovative therapies from China gain wider acknowledgment, we are witnessing an increasing interest from patients worldwide wishing to access these advancements. Our commitment is to deliver top-tier therapies while providing exceptional multidisciplinary care and dedicated support for international patients."
Jiahui International Cancer Center extends its comprehensive oncology services, covering medical oncology, surgical oncology, radiation oncology, precision medicine, and advanced cellular therapies. The center utilizes a multidisciplinary approach, coupled with a specialized International Patient Office, to assist patients worldwide with various needs, including reviewing medical records, scheduling specialist consultations, coordinating treatment plans, and providing logistical support throughout their treatment journey.
As medicine continues to evolve, the successful treatment of Josh and the approval of Satri-cel inspire hope and present new possibilities for patients facing formidable cancer diagnoses around the globe. This landmark achievement demonstrates the power of innovation in medicine and its potential to transform lives, emphasizing the increasing importance of international collaboration in advancing healthcare.
