National Kidney Foundation Introduces Community Initiative for Medication Decisions without Racial Bias

Transforming Kidney Function Assessment: A New Initiative

The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) is at the forefront of an important initiative aimed at enhancing kidney function assessment related to medication decisions. On July 20, 2026, the NKF launched the Implementing Medication Decisions with eGFR (IMeD-eGFR) Community, a national collaboration intended to foster the adoption of a race-agnostic approach towards estimating kidney function in adult patients.

This newly established community is a pivotal advancement, building upon NKF’s leadership in the field. By embracing the updated 2021 CKD-EPI estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) equation, this initiative will change longstanding practices that have relied on older equations, which often do not accurately reflect diverse populations. Traditional methods, particularly the Cockcroft-Gault equation, have guided medical decisions since 1976, but with recent advances in research and clinical practice, there is a critical need for modernization.

The Need for Change

The transition to a race-agnostic approach addresses the disparities present in healthcare. Many patients of color often face inaccurate assessments due to outdated methodologies that do not account for their unique circumstances. Dr. Andrew Bzowyckyj, a key figure in this initiative, emphasizes that this shift is among the most significant changes to kidney function assessment seen in decades. By creating a national platform, healthcare providers can share insights, strategies, and best practices to navigate this transition effectively.

A Collaborative Effort

The IMeD-eGFR Community encourages the involvement of a wide range of healthcare professionals, including pharmacists, physicians, laboratory experts, informaticists, electronic health record (EHR) leaders, and patients. This diverse involvement ensures that practical implementation strategies are developed for varied healthcare settings. Co-chaired by Dr. Bzowyckyj and Dr. Wendy St. Peter, the community is committed to providing resources and education designed to facilitate the widespread adoption of the race-agnostic eGFR equation.

Dr. St. Peter highlights that such collaboration across different healthcare specialties is essential for the success of this initiative. She states that sharing knowledge and experiences will lead to practical solutions that ultimately improve patient outcomes.

Resources and Support

Members of the IMeD-eGFR Community will benefit from educational discussions, hands-on implementation resources, and the opportunity to learn from early adopters across the healthcare system. This supportive environment will stimulate the development of guidelines and practices that adhere to the new standards in kidney function assessment.

Dr. Joseph Vassalotti, the Chief Medical Officer at NKF, underlines the importance of this modernization in ensuring patients receive care based on the latest scientific evidence. Establishing a coordinated effort will help translate this evidence into clinical practice and enhance nationwide implementation consistency.

A Call to Action

Healthcare professionals who are interested in contributing to this transformative movement are encouraged to join the IMeD-eGFR Community. More information and registration details can be found on the National Kidney Foundation's website.

Conclusion

As chronic kidney disease (CKD) continues to be a significant public health issue affecting approximately 1 in 7 adults in the United States, initiatives like the IMeD-eGFR Community represent a necessary evolution in the delivery of kidney care. The collaboration amongst diverse healthcare specialists is a promising step towards improving medication decisions without the influence of race, aiming for equitable healthcare delivery for all individuals.

In partnership with leading national pharmacy organizations, NKF is leading this vital movement with the support of grants, including one from the Doris Duke Foundation, to revolutionize kidney disease treatment and ensure every patient receives appropriate care.
