Ballard Power Systems Secures Major Fuel Cell Order for Samskip Vessels

Ballard Power Systems, a leader in fuel cell technology, has announced a pivotal new contract with eCap Marine GmbH to deliver 32 of its cutting-edge FCwave™ fuel cell engines, totaling 6.4 MW. This contract is intended for the retrofitting of two vessels belonging to Samskip, one of Europe’s largest multimodal transport service providers, operating in the short-sea shipping, rail, road, and inland waterways sectors.

This initiative continues the collaboration initiated in 2021, aiming to decarbonize the shipping routes between Norway and the Netherlands. The state-of-the-art FCwave™ engines will enhance environmental sustainability in maritime transportation, marking an exciting advancement in the use of hydrogen fuel cells for marine applications.

Marty Neese, President and CEO of Ballard Power Systems, expressed enthusiasm for the deal, emphasizing that this is one of the most significant fuel cell marine contracts in history. He highlighted the importance of this project in implementing PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) fuel cell technology in real-world maritime settings.

The integration of these engines into Samskip's fleet illustrates a commitment to operational excellence and environmental responsibility, a sentiment echoed by Lars Ravens, Managing Director of eCap Marine. Ravens noted that this partnership aligns with their mission to drastically reduce the carbon footprint of shipping, emphasizing their dedication to developing clean propulsion solutions that meet the challenging demands of long-haul maritime traffic.

The FCwave™ fuel cell module is globally recognized as the first DNV-certified solution suitable for marine applications, meeting rigorous safety and construction standards. The order is also supported by ENOVA, a Norwegian government agency focused on energy and climate initiatives, exemplifying the critical role of public-private partnerships in transitioning to sustainable marine energy solutions.

Ballard Power Systems aims to drive the adoption of zero-emission fuel cell technology not only for ships but also for buses, trucks, and stationary power applications. This vision contributes significantly to the worldwide drive for sustainable energy, aiming to electrify various modes of transportation to ensure a cleaner planet for future generations.

Additionally, eCap Marine specializes in providing innovative solutions for emission-free shipping. Operating from Hamburg, the company develops propulsion systems and solutions tailored for the marine sector, backed by a skilled team in shipbuilding and electrical engineering. Their commitment to facilitating hydrogen fuel applications underscores their role in the future of environmentally sustainable shipping.

The delivery of the FCwave™ engines is scheduled for 2025 and 2026, marking a major milestone in the journey towards cleaner maritime transport. As the urgency for addressing climate change grows, projects like this showcase how collaboration within the industry can lead to substantial progress in reducing emissions and fostering sustainability in maritime operations.
