The Launch of Dujiangyan's 2026 Village Candy Fair Welcomes New Year Festivities
The much-anticipated 2026 Village Candy Fair kicked off in Dujiangyan, Sichuan, just ahead of the New Year celebrations. This charming city, known for being home to the world's earliest operational irrigation system, set the stage for a unique cultural experience that highlights both its history and local specialties.
A Festive Opening with Lanterns
The fair began with a stunning lantern show that paid homage to the ancient wisdom of the region regarding water conservation. The display featured giant lantern installations inspired by prominent historical figures, such as Li Bing, the governor who oversaw the construction of the Dujiangyan irrigation system. Attendees were treated to a visually immersive nocturnal experience that celebrated local legends and rich narratives from the past.
Following the lantern spectacle, a themed market was set to run until January 3 in the historic area of Guanxian. Here, visitors could indulge in a variety of local beverages, teas, liquors, and delicious culinary delights. Noteworthy offerings also included five geographically indicated products unique to the region, such as kiwis and Chuanxiong (a type of Sichuan lovage), alongside exquisite creations reflecting the area's intangible cultural heritage.
Exciting Activities and Cultural Experiences
In addition to the market, Guanxian prepared an urban adventure with two themed routes: the Ancient Weir Tour and the Guanxian Flavor Trail. Participants could register via a mini-program to collect stamps and enjoy special promotions from local merchants, enhancing their engagement with the fair's offerings.
Beyond shopping and exploration, a rich lineup of cultural and touristic activities awaited visitors. This included demonstrations of intangible cultural heritage, costumed character parades, interactive performances, and displays of specialty products from Dujiangyan's international twin cities—all aimed at enriching the visitor experience and boosting holiday spending.
From January 1 through January 3, the Sustaining Water Forever Culture and Creation Industrial Park in Dujiangyan provided a unique immersive experience that harkened back to traditional times. Guests could capture memorable moments with performers dressed in Hanfu (traditional Chinese attire) and animal head costumes during a lively parade. They also had the chance to navigate marked trails to complete check-in style missions, earning “silver tickets” that could be exchanged for gifts or entered into draws for exclusive prizes.
As a highlight, the fair featured a special guest appearance by the anime-inspired fursuit character “Nine-Tails Lingjiu.” Previously, several scenic sites faced scrutiny for allegedly mimicking this distinctive design. The original character made an appearance at Lingran Workshop within the park, proudly showcasing authentic creative craftsmanship.
Starting in January, the park will also curate exhibitions and sales that focus on elements of intangible cultural heritage and creative products that emphasize water conservation. Furthermore, an online shopping center dedicated to the Village Candy Fair has launched, where digital avatars, deeply anchored in local Dujiangyan culture, serve as exclusive ambassadors to promote activities and showcase products.
The Village Candy Fair in Dujiangyan represents not only a celebration of local cuisine and traditions but also an embodiment of the city's cultural pride—drawing visitors from far and wide to partake in its festive spirit and explore the charm of Sichuan.
