2026-2027 ABMS Scholars Program Now Accepting Applications
The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) is excited to announce that applications are now open for the highly anticipated 2026-2027 ABMS Scholars Program™. This unique one-year, part-time initiative is dedicated to supporting early-career physicians and researchers as they embark on their journey to becoming leaders in healthcare.
Since its inception in 2014, this program has successfully facilitated the professional growth of 95 individuals, equipping them with the necessary skills to conduct impactful research and contribute to the evolving landscape of healthcare.
Program Overview
The ABMS Scholars Program offers grants of $15,000 to participants, which can be utilized for research-related expenses and travel. Whether you're working on an existing research project with a new scope or you have a groundbreaking original idea, this funding can help you achieve your goals. Applications for the upcoming cohort are due by
June 22, 2026, at 11:59 PM (CT).
Participants in the ABMS Scholars Program will engage in the following activities:
1.
Conduct Valuable Research: Scholars will focus on research that benefits both their home institutions and the wider certification community.
2.
Enhance Research Methodologies: Participants will refine their research methodologies and data analytics, addressing challenges in consultation with mentors and ABMS leaders.
3.
Build Professional Networks: Scholars will have opportunities to connect with national healthcare thought leaders from ABMS Member Boards and other key figures in medical education.
4.
Engage with the ABMS Community: Involvement in ABMS Committee Meetings, Executive Forums, and sponsored symposia will allow participants to disseminate their findings and receive feedback.
Throughout the year, scholars will maintain their positions at their home institutions while working alongside carefully selected mentors. They will provide monthly updates on their research projects via webinars, receiving invaluable feedback from peers and mentors. Scholars will present their research findings at the annual ABMS Conference, showcasing their advancements to a national audience.
Eligibility and Selection Criteria
Eligible candidates include early-career physicians, junior faculty members, fellows, and residents. Additionally, individuals with master’s or doctorate degrees in relevant fields such as public health, health policy, or health services research are welcome to apply. The selection process will consider the quality and relevance of the proposed research, particularly its potential impact on health disparities and workforce diversification.
Applications developed in collaboration with one or more ABMS Member Boards are encouraged. Notifications for selected scholars will be sent out in
August 2026, and the program will commence in
September 2026.
