Mike and Corky Stoller's $3M Investment in Altadena and Pasadena Recovery Efforts

A Significant Investment for Community Recovery

In a powerful response to the devastating wildfires that struck historically Black neighborhoods in Los Angeles County, renowned songwriter Mike Stoller and his wife, jazz musician Corky Hale Stoller, have made a substantial commitment of $3 million to the Black LA Relief Recovery Fund. This fund, spearheaded by the Black Freedom Fund in collaboration with the California Community Foundation, embraces a community-centered approach to recovery, ensuring that resources and decision-making powers remain in the hands of those affected.

The wildfires wreaked havoc on communities in Altadena and Pasadena, areas that have long been impacted by systemic issues like redlining and discriminatory housing policies. These disasters destroyed not only homes that had been passed down through generations but also vital community spaces such as churches, schools, and parks. Despite the loss of physical structures, the spirit of community remains resilient.

Mike Stoller's investment in the Black Freedom Fund is monumental. It marks the establishment of California's very first Black community foundation and focuses on rebuilding efforts led by trusted organizations within these communities. This initiative aims not only for short-term recovery but also for long-term rebuilding, addressing the roots of inequality that the fires have illuminated. Stoller emphasized, "This isn't just about houses; it's about people—individuals who have long faced barriers to homeownership and community resources. Corky and I want to support the preservation of these communities and encourage others to do likewise."

Corky Hale added, "Our investment is about ensuring that these families have a pathway back to their homes and that they can feel secure in their neighborhoods once again. It's time to help them rebuild, not just their houses, but their lives."

The urgency of their commitment resonates deeply in light of the statistics that reveal families often do not return home after displacement. Jasmin Shupper, the Founder and CEO of Greenline Housing Foundation, stated, "History shows that if families are forced to leave while they rebuild, the odds of returning drop dramatically. We are striving to change that narrative. This investment has helped secure two crucial community lots for our innovative landbanking initiative and has provided housing grants to 33 families."

The recovery fund has already made tangible strides in addressing the aftermath of the fires. Over the course of 2025, it has invested in 37 local organizations, each vital in tackling both the immediate effects of the disaster and the deeper inequities faced by Black communities. These groups are actively providing housing stabilization, financial assistance, and essential support services for youth and seniors. Moreover, mental health services and policy advocacy to protect Black wealth and homeownership are central to their mission.

Organizations such as Neighborhood Housing Services of Los Angeles County are pivotal in delivering holistic support to families. Lori Gay, the President and CEO of the organization, highlighted their multi-faceted programs: "We care about how families return home, not just that they return. It's crucial they have trusted advice to navigate their unique challenges. Black homeowners shouldn't face displacement just because the existing systems are not designed for them. With this community-centered recovery approach, we can assist families in returning, rebuilding, and ensuring their financial security for generations to come."

In these tough times, the community's collective strength shines through. The investments made by Stoller and Hale serve as a beacon of hope and a clarion call for support. As described by Mike Stoller, it’s an essential task to preserve the cultural fabric and spirit of these neighborhoods while encouraging everyone to take part in the recovery process.

For those looking to contribute to the cause, donations can be made at Black LA Relief Recovery Fund or by texting 'BlackLA' to 707070. Together, community members and allies can forge a path toward recovery and sustain the legacy of Black neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Much like the enduring songs of Mike Stoller, the resilience of these communities can create enduring harmony amidst adversity.
