Sungrow Introduces the PowerTitan 3.0 in Madrid
On February 4, 2026, at the PV & ESS Summit held in Madrid, Sungrow, the global leader in photovoltaic inverters and energy storage systems (ESS), unveiled two groundbreaking products tailored for the European market: the PowerTitan 3.0 battery storage system and a single-platform design for a DC-coupled PV-ESS solution. The summit attracted over 300 partners and industry experts, including representatives from SolarPower Europe, TÜV, and DEKRA, who engaged in discussions about new technologies and market trends. Central to the summit was the crucial role of integrated PV and ESS technologies in the ongoing energy transition.
Commitment to European Markets
James Li, Sungrow's Vice President for Europe, emphasized the company’s ongoing commitment to Europe as a key market, reinforced by a robust local service ecosystem. Sungrow operates an extensive service network that includes over 280 engineers, five repair workshops, 14 service depots, and more than 220 service partners. Looking ahead, the company plans to expand its presence in Europe through strategic partnerships and cutting-edge technologies to further facilitate the energy transition.
The Importance of Large-Scale Energy Storage
According to SolarPower Europe (SPE), the cumulative PV capacity in the EU reached 406 GW in 2025. While integrating renewable energies into the power system has led to challenges such as grid congestion, increased curtailments, and negative electricity prices, SPE predicts a 40% rise in demand for flexible energy services. As such, scaling up large battery energy storage systems (BESS) has become essential. In 2025, over 26 GWh of BESS was installed, marking the first time that large-scale storage surpassed residential systems. SPE expects an average annual growth rate of 30% for BESS, aiming for a total of 412 GWh by 2030.
Next Generation Utility ESS: PowerTitan 3.0
The PowerTitan 3.0 has been meticulously designed to address the demands of a modern energy system. It is integrated within a 20-foot container housing a 1.78 MW PCS with 7.14 MWh battery capacity, allowing for a four-hour configuration. Each block can achieve up to 7.2 MW or 28.5 MWh. The innovative design includes stacked 600Ah+ battery cells that enhance safety and efficiency, contributing to an overall round-trip efficiency (RTE) of 92%. Moreover, the AC block design allows for pre-installation and configuration at factories, enabling a substantial 1 GWh-capacity project to be rolled out in just twelve days. The system operates without power reduction at temperatures as low as -40°C, making it ideal for Nordic and alpine regions, as well as coastal and high-humidity areas.
Innovative Single-Platform Design
Alongside the PowerTitan 3.0, Sungrow introduced a single-platform design for its DC-coupled PV-ESS solutions. This consists of a modular inverter with a dedicated ESS interface, as well as an integrated DC/DC module and an in-house developed PV-ESS management system. This embedded structure allows for prolonged discharge periods of up to eight hours while optimizing overall system costs. Sungrow created this solution specifically for the European market to enable effective energy arbitrage, capitalizing on the differences between high and low tariffs, while improving grid compatibility through optimized charging cycles. To date, this DC-coupled solution has been implemented in over 90 projects across more than ten countries.
Pioneering Grid-Forming Technology
The emergence of grid-forming technology is becoming a vital component for resilient and stable electricity networks. Dr. Henry Liu, head of Sungrow's Grid Solutions department, highlighted the growing importance of these technologies in stabilizing power systems fed by renewable energy sources and complying with new EU standards. Sungrow’s core competencies include voltage and frequency support, oscillation damping, gigawatt-scale black start capabilities, and enhancing system resilience and stability. These capabilities have already been integrated into landmark projects, such as a 7.8 GWh project in Saudi Arabia, the largest grid-forming ESS project globally.
A Landmark Project in Spain
During the event, Sungrow successfully established a collaboration for a 100 MW / 200 MWh system with Enlight, which will form part of a threefold hybrid facility incorporating wind, PV, and storage. This initiative aims to enhance grid flexibility and maximize renewable energy utilization, with PowerTitan systems set for delivery in Q2 2026.
Global Expertise with Local Presence
Having been active in Europe since 2005, Sungrow has developed a regional presence comprising 25 local offices, two R&D centers, 26 warehouse locations, and three training, technology, and service centers, with its European headquarters situated in Munich. Among its recent flagship projects are one of the largest BESS projects in continental Europe in Belgium (800 MWh), the Bramley ESS project in the UK (330 MWh), the northernmost PV project in Finland (70 MW), and a 70 MW hybrid project in Turkey.
