New Project Initiated to Cultivate Experts in Art and Technology

A new initiative titled 'Dialogue on Art and Technology (DAT)' has been launched by Ikaku Inc. in Tokyo, aimed at nurturing specialists in the fields of media and digital arts. This project is set to commence in November 2025 and has received support from the Cultural Agency through a grant under the Japan Arts Council, specifically targeting the enhancement of cultural artistic activities.

Eagerly anticipated, this multi-faceted project will span over three years, featuring an array of programs including lectures, research, boot camps, and the planning and execution of exhibitions in Japan and abroad. The Executive Director, Masaki Fujihata, a renowned media artist involved in establishing the Department of Environmental Information at Keio University and the Graduate School of Film and New Media at Tokyo University of the Arts, will lead this initiative.

One of the project's major components is a seven-part online course, commencing with an introductory orientation on November 23, 2025. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with various guests, including artists, producers, curators, and researchers, fostering a new educational infrastructure tailored for professionals in this dynamic field.

Overview of the Project

The 'Dialogue on Art and Technology (DAT)' project intends to focus on developing a comprehensive educational program that encompasses both educational lectures and the realization of exhibitions. The main goals are the construction of concepts related to art and technology and the achievement of two exhibitions, which will serve as practical training environments for participants.

In recent years, as globalization re-evaluates its impact, there has been a growing appreciation within the international art scene for works that incorporate diverse cultural backgrounds rather than adhering to Eurocentric values. To enhance Japan’s international presence and foster mutual understanding through cultural arts, it is essential for participants to accurately interpret cultural differences and clearly communicate their contexts. The DAT project, lasting until March 2028, aims to contribute to the sustainable development of the art and technology sectors in Japan by promoting discourse and dialogue among professionals in this area.

Fujihata emphasizes the project's dual aims of conceptual development and the showcasing of these concepts through two exhibitions as part of an ongoing dialogue between East and West, exploring the complex relationship between art and technology. He notes that while many artists can navigate technical skills related to rapidly advancing digital media, few grasp the essence required to unlock new artistic frontiers.

The rapid evolution of technology now encroaches on realms previously exclusive to human intelligence, particularly with the advent of generative AI that can create images and videos from prompts. This situation poses an existential challenge, where art becomes the last bastion of humanity’s unique expression.

Upcoming Online Course: Concepts of Art and Technology

The online course titled “Concept Building in Art and Technology” will commence in November 2025 and will offer participants insights into global trends in art and technology. The first session will outline the course details and guest speakers, led by Fujihata.

Target participants include artists looking to develop concepts utilizing technology, professionals in the international entertainment industry, and individuals dedicated to crafting visions for digital transformation. This course is not just for artists but is designed to engage anyone interested in understanding the intersection of art and technology in contemporary society.
