Okayama University Celebrates Young Research Excellence

On May 6, 2026, Okayama University, located in Okayama City and led by President Yoshitomo Nasu, hosted an award ceremony to honor exceptional young researchers with the prestigious "Okayama University Young Top Researcher Award" for the 2025 academic year. He stated, "I want to approach this challenge from innovative angles, focusing on glycoproteins and mitochondria. Although I am still in the midst of my work, I am incredibly honored to receive this recognition. I will continue to strive for excellence in my research."

The Young Researcher Award program was established in 2007 with the goal of fostering young researchers capable of contributing internationally. Associate Professor Hiroshi Okoshi

He investigates the potential unintended consequences of policies that may seem beneficial at first glance. Notably, he was the second youngest researcher nationwide to receive a scientific research grant (fundamental B) in the field of economics and management, accepted in 2025. Holding a Ph.D. from Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, his work has been published in top journals like the International Economic Review, underscoring his recognized research accomplishments. Associate Professor Hiroki Mise

From the Graduate School of Medical Development at Okayama University Hospital, Associate Professor Mise concentrates on chronic kidney diseases and diabetes complications, particularly focusing on glycoproteins and mitochondria. By utilizing cutting-edge techniques such as single-cell glycan and RNA sequencing, spatial glycomics, cryo-electron tomography, and spatial metabolomics, he is making substantial contributions to this field. Mise has been granted numerous competitive grants as a research lead, including those from the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development. His accolades include the Oshima Award from the Japanese Society of Nephrology and the Encouragement of Medical Research Award from the Japan Medical Association. Through collaboration with both domestic and international research facilities, he is advancing projects that explore new biomarkers linked to glycoproteins in organs, blood, and urine, aiming for the eventual development of novel therapeutics targeting these areas.
