The Speak Foundation Receives Significant Support from BridgeBio Pharma
The Speak Foundation has announced an essential commitment of $300,000, provided by BridgeBio Pharma, aimed at fortifying the national LGMD (Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy) Centers of Excellence. This two-year investment will enhance a patient-driven initiative designed to streamline care, improve research accessibility, and facilitate new treatments for individuals affected by LGMD.
The innovative LGMD Centers of Excellence intend to replace fragmentation in patient care with a more coordinated approach. Individuals diagnosed with LGMD often face challenges in locating specialized healthcare providers and may have to explain their rare condition to health practitioners who lack familiarity with LGMD. At these centers, patients will have the opportunity to work closely with clinicians who specialize in neuromuscular diseases, enabling a more cohesive and informed treatment process. The coordinators at these centers will help patients navigate care across various specialties, including cardiology, pulmonology, and neurology, offering critical advice on monitoring and overall health management.
The expansion of this crucial network aims to make expert LGMD care more accessible for families nationwide while simultaneously working towards the establishment of unified standards concerning care, education for patients, and collaborative research participation.
Kat Knudson, Founder and CEO of The Speak Foundation, emphasized the importance of this investment, stating, "This funding enables us to continue reinforcing the clinical framework that the LGMD community so desperately needs. What sets this program apart is its patient-led nature and its foundations built upon the identified needs of patients and their families—from enhanced access to specialized care to improved readiness for clinical trial participation and subsequent treatments."
Doug Sproule, MD, the Chief Medical Officer at BridgeBio Neuromuscular, expressed pride in collaborating with The Speak Foundation, noting, "We are honored to support a patient-led initiative aimed at enhancing specialized care and fostering connectivity within the LGMD community. Programs like the LGMD Centers of Excellence provide a solid foundation for both patients and families while promoting ongoing research and development in LGMD therapies." These Centers of Excellence will not only enhance immediate patient care but will also serve as a catalyst for future therapeutic advancements, addressing the pressing needs of individuals grappling with LGMD.
In conjunction with this commitment, BridgeBio Neuromuscular is also engaged in the development of BBP-418 (ribitol), an experimental oral treatment for LGMDR9, which is linked to mutations in the FKRP gene. The funding from BridgeBio aims to fortify and broaden the existing network of LGMD Centers of Excellence, along with supporting resources that can significantly enhance the patient experience and contribute to the future landscape of LGMD healthcare.
