Sungrow Unveils Groundbreaking 60MWh Battery Project Near Arctic Circle

Sungrow, a leading name in the photovoltaic (PV) inverter and energy storage system arena, has recently completed a significant project close to the Arctic Circle. Situated in Simo, Finland, this newly launched 60MWh battery storage project symbolizes a leap forward in the realm of renewable energy applications in extreme latitudes. This initiative is not just a testament to modern engineering and sustainable technology but also plays an essential role in supporting Finland's drive towards a greener future.

Project Overview

The Simo battery storage facility, one of the northernmost battery power plants globally, is part of the FRV AmpTank joint venture. It consists of 26 state-of-the-art Sungrow PowerTitan battery containers, boasting a power output of 30MW alongside its impressive storage capacity of 60MWh. This facility is crucial for stabilizing the local grid, especially as Finland aims to integrate more renewable energy sources, including wind and solar power, into its energy mix.

The advanced Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is designed to provide both short-duration and long-duration storage capabilities. Sungrow's commitment to innovation and sustainability is evident in the design and functionality of this BESS, engineered to excel under Finland's challenging weather conditions. Whether battling sub-zero temperatures or extended daylight, the PowerTitan system promises high reliability and efficiency.

Technical Innovation and Design

The PowerTitan battery system is a liquid-cooled BESS specifically developed for utility-scale applications. Its compact design allows for efficient transportation and installation, as the components can be delivered pre-assembled in shipping containers. This setup not only streamlines the installation process but also allows for back-to-back installations without any performance loss. The choice of lithium iron phosphate batteries ensures a long lifespan alongside minimal maintenance requirements, thus enhancing operational efficiency.

Hannu Koivusalo, Chairman of AmpTank, emphasized the dual reasons for selecting Sungrow for this crucial project. Firstly, the technical reliability of Sungrow's technology was paramount, as it assured consistent performance in varying climatic conditions. Secondly, the long-term reliability concerning maintenance and support offered by Sungrow proved competitive in the market.

According to Henry Särkisilta, Key Account Manager at Sungrow Finland, their successful collaboration with FRV AmpTank marks an important milestone in delivering one of the world’s northernmost battery power plants. “Our products are designed to operate in demanding conditions, ensuring stability and efficiency for Finland's renewable energy grid and our customers,” he explained.

The Bigger Picture

As Finland continues its transition towards renewable energy sources, the Simo BESS project stands as a shining example of how integrating intelligent storage solutions can strengthen and stabilize an energy grid. Sungrow's mission—“Clean power for all”—is clearly reflected in its innovative approach to energy storage. By providing reliable and efficient systems, they are playing a vital role in building a sustainable future.

This project is not merely about batteries and storage; it’s about fostering a clean and resilient energy landscape. As countries around the globe strive to enhance their renewable energy infrastructures, initiatives like the Simo BESS can serve as blueprints for similar endeavors around the world.
