Tokyo Gas Engineering Solutions Leads the Way in Thailand's Renewable Energy Transition
Tokyo Gas Engineering Solutions (TGES), led by President Takayuki Uenaka, has launched an ambitious project in Thailand aimed at promoting decarbonization through the implementation of large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and photovoltaic (PV) solar power setups. This initiative has been accepted as part of the Japanese government's fiscal 2024 Global South Future-Oriented Collaborative Projects funded by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), through the ASEAN member countries program.
The project will see the installation of approximately 20MWh of BESS and 20MW of PV across several manufacturing sites that face high electricity consumption. This marks an important milestone for TGES, as it's the first overseas demonstration of their proprietary technology that integrates BESS and PV systems. The essence of the project lies in deploying an onsite Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) scheme that has proven successful in Japan and is now being adapted for the Thai market.
By harnessing excess electricity generated from the PV systems and charging the BESS, TGES plans to discharge that stored energy during night hours or peak consumption times. This strategic approach aims to enhance the utilization of renewable energy, reduce CO₂ emissions, and stabilize the local power grid.
As solar energy continues to proliferate in Thailand, effective management of surplus electricity and grid stability have become pressing issues. Expectation surrounding the adoption of Japanese-made industrial BESS is significant, with the demonstration leveraging government support to alleviate initial investment burdens, resulting in a comprehensive budget of approximately 3.7 billion yen.
The project will also focus on gathering and verifying data related to local electricity conditions, system effectiveness in high-temperature, high-humidity environments, equipment performance, and operational requirements. The aim is to establish a foundation for the broader deployment of Japanese industrial BESS and PV systems through PPAs within Thailand, paving the way for future cost reductions and sustainable business models.
