Discovery of Garzaia by Ruffino
In an exciting announcement from Ruffino, a distinguished Tuscany winery, the renowned winery will launch a new top-tier Bolgheri wine called Garzaia, starting June 17, 2025, through Pieroth Japan. Founded in 1877, Ruffino is celebrated as a pioneer of Chianti Classico and is among the finest wineries not only in Tuscany but throughout Italy. With a reach that spans 83 countries, Ruffino has gained recognition for both high-quality wines and innovative offerings, achieving remarkable acclaim in the Super Tuscan category.
The Expertise of Olga Fusari
Renowned winemaker Olga Fusari, who possesses extensive knowledge of Bolgheri, will showcase this newly created wine. The Garzaia Bolgheri Superiore DOC promises to be a standout addition to Ruffino's collection, made exclusively from estate vineyards owned by Ruffino. The purchase of notable vineyards in the scenic Bolgheri area on the Tuscan coast initiated this project in 2023. What sets Bolgheri apart is its ability to produce robust and rich wines using international grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, without the restrictions set by Italian wine laws. Bolgheri DOC, with only 75 producers, is considered one of the most prestigious wine regions globally.
Constellation Brands Connection
Ruffino's parent company, Constellation Brands, is also known for owning The Prisoner, a cult wine from California. Both brands share a common commitment to uncompromised quality, reflecting a steadfast philosophy in wine production.
Completing a Portfolio of Fine Wines
Garzaia will join Ruffino's luxurious lineup, which includes the Riserva Ducale Oro (Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG), Romitorio di Santedame Chianti Classico Gran Selezione (Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG), Greppone Mazzi (Brunello di Montalcino DOCG), Modus Primo (IGT), and Alaud (IGT). This addition strengthens Ruffino's legacy of pursuing the pinnacle of Tuscan winemaking that has been ongoing for around 150 years.
Olga Fusari commented, "Bolgheri is where my winemaking journey began, and I feel a sense of coming home each time I return. Bringing a new project to fruition is a special moment in a winemaker's career. I hope that everyone who gets to taste Garzaia feels this passion."
The Meaning Behind the Name Garzaia
Garzaia signifies a nesting place where multiple herons gather closely together, symbolizing harmony and coexistence in the untamed natural environment between land and water. This name embodies the 'spirit of the land,' deeply rooted in the history and landscape of Bolgheri. Ruffino’s vineyards are located along Bolgheri’s picturesque roads of Le Sondraie and Le Botze, covering two parcels totaling 15 hectares.
Wine Style and Composition
The blend features a composition that made Bolgheri world-famous. It consists of 70% Cabernet Franc, while Merlot complements the softness and roundness, resulting in a wine that exemplifies balance and elegance. The 2023 growing season in Bolgheri experienced stable weather with ample sunshine, which was beneficial for consistent ripening. A significant rainfall at the end of August replenished moisture, contributing to optimal conditions leading to perfect maturation.
The 2023 Ruffino Garzaia is priced at ¥47,190 (tax included).
