Exploring the Unique Ecosystem of Hinuma: A Summer Wildlife Observation Event

Discovering Hinuma: A Summer Wildlife Observation Event

On July 26, 2026, the Pal System Ibaraki Tochigi will host a wildlife observation event at Hinuma Natural Park in Ibaraki Town from 10 AM to 12 PM. Approximately 100 participants, including families of members and staff, will gather to explore the unique biodiversity of the Ramsar-registered wetland.

The Significance of Hinuma

Hinuma is a rare brackish lake in the Kanto region where freshwater and seawater mix. This event is designed to educate attendees about this unique ecosystem and foster a deeper understanding of environmental conservation efforts. By bridging generations, the event aims to ensure that the natural beauty of Hinuma is preserved for future generations.

Every year, countless species are observed at Hinuma, including rare native types such as the Japanese eel and various crabs, alongside non-native species. Last year alone, attendees discovered nearly 20 different species, including both endangered and imported organisms. This makes the event not only educational but also a unique opportunity to witness the diversity of life in a special habitat.

Ecological Importance and Activities

Hinuma is cherished for its shallow waters that allow sunlight to penetrate, fostering life in abundance. The Pal System Ibaraki Tochigi holds annual wildlife observation events each summer and winter bird watching sessions to observe waterfowl that flock to the area seeking food. These activities offer regular opportunities for the community to engage with and appreciate the rich natural environment that surrounds them.
