Okayama University Representatives Shine at UN University SDG Symposium

On March 27, 2025, the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) organized a significant symposium at the UNU Headquarters in Tokyo. This event was aimed at discussing sustainability initiatives among universities participating in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) University Partnership Platform (SDG-UP). Vice President Atsufumi Yokoi of Okayama University represented the university at this symposium.

The symposium commenced with a video message from Dr. Chiziri Maruwala, the President of UNU and UN Under-Secretary-General, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts towards achieving the SDGs. The first part of the event featured a panel discussion titled 'Introduction to the Activities of the Working Groups and University Sustainability Initiatives.' Here, Vice President Yokoi presented on the theme "Activism of Students Towards a Sustainable Campus," covering four key areas: governance, educational research, environmental energy, and community service. Through this, he showcased the various initiatives undertaken by universities involved in the sustainable campus working group, including those of Okayama University.

In addition to introducing the efforts at Okayama University, Vice President Yokoi shared insights from his experience as a visiting scholar at the MIT Office of Sustainability in the United States, highlighting the integration of AI and data science in sustainable management practices.

The second session of the symposium, titled 'Student Initiatives Towards the SDGs,' featured presentations from students of Osaka University, Kwansei Gakuin University, and Nara University of Education. This segment provided a platform for young voices in discussing their active contributions to sustainability.

Looking ahead, Okayama University is committed to deepening and developing inter-university collaboration through its participation in SDG-UP. The university aims to strengthen multi-generational solidarity, including among younger populations, while showcasing its initiatives on a global stage. This initiative not only reinforces the university's reputation but also serves as a pivotal point in Japan's sustainable development efforts.

The SDG University Partnership Platform (SDG-UP) was established in 2020 by the UNU-IAS to facilitate collaboration among Japanese universities eager to contribute to the SDGs. This platform aims to bolster efforts related to higher education initiatives for sustainable development, personnel training, and partnerships with various stakeholders. Through SDG-UP's activities, it seeks to inspire behavioral changes among higher education stakeholders towards creating a more resilient society

In conclusion, Vice President Atsufumi Yokoi's participation and presentations have spotlighted Okayama University’s commitment to sustainability and its active role in the global pursuit of the SDGs. Moving forward, the university eagerly anticipates building upon its strengths as a core research institution and looks forward to advancing its contributions to both regional and global sustainability in the years to come.
