43North Foundation Aims for a Stunning $5 Billion Economic Impact in Buffalo Over Next Decade
The 43North Foundation has launched a bold initiative aimed at transforming a $100 million investment into a staggering $5 billion in economic impact over the next decade within Buffalo, New York. This initiative, designed to bolster the local economy, will focus on cultivating innovative startups, attracting substantial investments from established companies, and promoting Buffalo as a desirable destination for external businesses. The foundation, established from the proceeds of the 43North accelerator program—a $5 million annual initiative for high-growth startups—has been pivotal in reshaping the entrepreneurial landscape of Buffalo, a city that has long struggled with economic challenges.
With Colleen E. Heidinger taking the reins as the new CEO from January 1, 2027, the foundation is set for a new chapter of growth and development. Heidinger, who has been instrumental in the organization for over a decade, succeeded Sarah Tanbakuchi-Ripa, the foundation's former leader. The transition is expected to be seamless, with both leaders committed to ensuring a smooth handover. Bill Maggio, the Chairman of the Board, emphasized the collective effort involved in achieving Buffalo's newfound economic momentum, recognizing the many contributors who believed in the city's potential.
The foundation's investment will be guided by four strategic initiatives: Radial Ventures, which focuses on building innovative companies; TechBuffalo, designed to develop talent and skill pathways; the Ambassador Network, which engages regional business leaders; and Series B, a new platform gaining popularity among tech enthusiasts. Since its inception, 43North has supported nearly 80 startups, resulting in the creation of over 3,000 jobs and an impressive $1 billion in additional investments, demonstrating the significant ripple effect of the foundation's efforts.
Among the standout successes from this initiative is ACV Auctions, a tech startup recognized as Buffalo's first unicorn after a 2021 IPO propelling its valuation to $3.8 billion. Under Heidinger's leadership, 43North has established itself as a crucial element of Buffalo's innovation economy and a model being studied by other cities looking to replicate its success.
Reflecting on the foundation's journey, Heidinger noted, "I'm incredibly proud of what we've built here over the past decade—real companies, real jobs. We’re aiming high with $5 billion in economic impact over the next ten years." Her dedication to Buffalo extends beyond her professional life; having deep roots in the community, she actively participates in local philanthropic efforts and has played a significant role in shaping entrepreneurial education in schools.
The upcoming final event for 43North's annual competition is set for October 8, 2026, marking the culmination of twelve years of programming. However, the foundation's objectives will continue well beyond this event as it commits to a permanent investment in Buffalo's innovation future. The plans laid out by the 43North Foundation represent a transformative approach, harnessing collective talents to drive economic change while fostering a supportive entrepreneurial ecosystem.
With the foundation's new $5 billion goal, Buffalo stands at the brink of a brighter economic future, underlining the importance of innovation, resilience, and community collaboration. The 43North Foundation invites all stakeholders—from aspiring entrepreneurs to seasoned investors—to join in witnessing and contributing to this remarkable journey toward revitalizing Buffalo's economy.
