Future of Us Festival Set to Spark Civic Imagination
In a groundbreaking initiative, the
Future of Us Festival will launch in
San Francisco from
July 4–12, 2026, commemorating the nation’s 250th anniversary. This 10-day event will bring together diverse communities to collaboratively envision the future through storytelling, interactive design, and various artistic expressions. The festival thrives on the motto of inclusivity and collective imagination, serving as a platform for more than 30
Future Culture Fellows drawn from neighborhoods across the city's Supervisorial and Cultural Districts.
A Celebration of Unity and Creativity
The festival is the central element of the larger
Future of Us initiative, which encompasses three key components:
The Visions, a nationwide tour collecting community reflections;
The Festival, the 10-day celebration itself; and
The Collective, a coalition of local civic leaders and creatives focused on fostering civic engagement. This initiative aims to redefine civic culture by blending corporate innovation with collective imagination, integrating fields of art and science to inspire a more vibrant civic life.
As noted by
Stephanie Fine Sasse, co-creator of
Future of Us, “San Francisco has a legacy of fearless civic reimagining, from the Summer of Love to the rise of digital culture. This festival is an experiment to see how we can rethink our future by giving more voices space to co-imagine the civic lives they aspire to.”
Thematic Programming
The festival's programming is centered around four core themes:
- - Green Futures: Activities revolving around environmental consciousness and sustainable practices.
- - Social Futures: Focused on building community, inclusivity, and collaboration.
- - Science & Tech Futures: Exploring innovations that transform society.
- - Media Futures: Investigating how storytelling can shape our collective understanding and vision.
Signature Programming
The main event will occur at
The Pearl in
Dogpatch, featuring a showcase from
The Plenary, Co. and
Nothin But Hits. Attendees can expect immersive art installations that bring community visions to life, alongside dynamic daily programming and live performances. A notable highlight will be a citywide
scavenger hunt that encourages local exploration and awareness of the city’s diverse ecosystems, crafted in collaboration with the
Emerging Creatives of Science.
Fellow-Led Activations
In addition to the signature programming, the festival will host over
50 unique activations organized by the Future Culture Fellows. These events will range from a
pop-up floral labyrinth designed for reflection to discussions on disaster readiness and engaging food storytelling dinners, providing enriching experiences that emphasize personal and communal growth.
Collaborative Partner Programs
The festival will be bolstered by contributions from more than
20 partnering organizations, including exhibitions from
SFMOMA and family-friendly events hosted by
Art of San Francisco. Activities will take place at various venues around the city, fostering a sense of community ownership and engagement. Events led by organizations such as
CivicMakers and the
SF Environment Department will connect participants with tangible opportunities to co-create the futures imagined during the festival.
Neighborhood Pop-Ups
To reach every corner of San Francisco,
neighborhood pop-ups will facilitate localized conversations and creative engagement. The
Good Neighbor Lab will distribute civic conversation kits to invite discussions in community spaces across the city, emphasizing decentralized, hyperlocal participation.
Join the Movement
Even though the festival is still a few months away, the groundwork is being laid for an immersive experience that maps out the collective aspirations of a city bound together by vision-driven creativity. The
Future Culture Fellowship supports the inaugural cohort of Future Culture Collective members for continued engagement post-festival.
Future of Us is supported by various philanthropic partners and organizations, fostering a collaborative ecosystem aimed at enriching civic life and ensuring that every community member can participate meaningfully in shaping their future. More detailed information about the programming will be announced in the coming weeks.
