RWE Partners with GE Vernova to Boost U.S. Renewable Energy Production

In a significant move to reinforce America's renewable energy infrastructure, RWE announces its expanded partnership with General Electric Vernova (GE Vernova). This collaboration focuses on supplying over 100 domestically manufactured wind turbines for two major energy projects in West Texas, which aim to generate a total of 308 megawatts of power. RWE, recognized as the third-largest renewable energy provider in the United States, is committed to investing in local energy initiatives to stimulate rural economic development and support the ongoing growth in U.S. energy dominance.

This new partnership underlines RWE's strategy of enhancing domestic energy capacity in response to increasing demand, primarily driven by Texas's rapidly evolving technology and manufacturing sectors. Their projects will include the upgrade of the existing 127 MW Forest Creek wind farm, currently undergoing significant renovations, and the construction of the Honey Mesquite wind farm, slated to commence in the fall of 2025.

Both energy projects will leverage cutting-edge technology from GE Vernova, which will supply 109 of its state-of-the-art 2.82 MW wind turbines. This move is indicative of RWE's commitment to supporting the ongoing manufacturing renaissance in the United States, as highlighted by Kevin Kroll, Chief Operating Officer of RWE Clean Energy. He stated that the investment symbolizes RWE's dedication to generating homegrown energy and empowering U.S.-based supply chains through partnerships with esteemed American companies like GE Vernova.

The Forest Creek wind farm's modernization will extend its operational lifespan for an additional 30 years, a crucial step considering the increasing pressure on renewable energy sources to meet national needs. The project will involve decommissioning all original wind towers and components before new foundations are laid for the latest turbine technology. Expected to be operational by the end of 2025, the site symbolizes a shift toward using American-made components in renewable energy production.

Furthermore, RWE is dedicated to managing waste responsibly. The company has partnered with Wanzek Construction, a subsidiary of MasTec Renewables, to guarantee that materials removed during the decommissioning process—such as turbine blades and nacelles—are appropriately recycled or repurposed. This initiative reflects not only a commitment to sustainability but also an innovative approach to construction waste management.

The Honey Mesquite project follows the Forest Creek initiative, further adding to the region's energy portfolio. While construction is set to begin later this year, the project is anticipated to commence operations in late 2026. Together, these projects are projected to create numerous job opportunities during the peak construction phases and inject millions of dollars into the local economy, showcasing RWE's commitment to accelerating growth in rural areas

As part of its investment strategy, RWE has earmarked a total of $9 billion for Texas since 2007, fostering long-lasting economic opportunities across numerous communities where renewable facilities are operational. In effect, the upgraded Forest Creek and new Honey Mesquite projects are expected to yield around $60 million in tax revenue for Glasscock and Sterling Counties over their operational lifetimes. This injection of funds will significantly expand the tax base, benefiting local services such as schools, law enforcement, and fire protection districts.
