South Carolina Student Competes in National Finals of Mott Million Dollar Challenge

In an impressive showcase of young entrepreneurship, Kailyn Brown, a third-grade student from Columbia, South Carolina, has advanced to the semifinals of the prestigious Mott Million Dollar Challenge. This national pitch competition, which aims to empower students with entrepreneurial skills, selected Kailyn from thousands of participants, highlighting her innovative spirit and creativity.

A Unique Invention: Sticky Pals

Kailyn created "Sticky Pals w/ Magic Medicine", a charming solution designed to help children overcome the fear associated with receiving injections. Her invention comprises animal-shaped adhesive patches that deliver a numbing medicine prior to a shot, transforming a potentially distressing experience into something more enjoyable for young patients. The playful patches come in delightful designs, engaging children’s imaginations by allowing them to pretend they are “feeding” the Sticky Pal as they receive their injection.

"This will make the experience fun for kids and take away the fear that comes with watching the nurse or doctor," Kailyn explained during her pitch for the challenge. Her inventive approach not only addresses the anxiety many children face regarding needles but also provides comfort during medical visits. Competition Details

The Mott Million Dollar Challenge is a national event that celebrates young innovators. Out of more than 5,300 submissions from all 50 states and Washington, D.C., approximately 3,700 ideas were considered in total. The challenge includes multiple rounds, with only 60 semifinalists making it through to the live event scheduled for June 15-16 in Flint, Michigan. Each semifinalist, including Kailyn, is awarded $5,000 for their ideas and has the opportunity to present their business concept to a panel of judges.

The Mott Million Dollar Challenge is funded by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, commemorating its centennial, and is organized in collaboration with the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship, VentureLab, and various educational allies.
