Exploring Linyi: An Emerging Hub of High-Quality Growth in Eastern China

Linyi Trade City: A Beacon of Economic Transformation

Nestled in the eastern part of China, Linyi is rapidly establishing itself as a dynamic center for international trade, following the recent 5th Import Expo of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) held in Shandong. This event attracted a myriad of domestic and international buyers and exhibitors from 48 countries, underscoring Linyi's strategic move towards enhancing its global trade footprint.

Strategic Development Initiatives

The city is home to Linyi Trade City, one of the first and largest wholesale market clusters in China, with an impressive annual turnover of 708.53 billion yuan last year. The trade city's logistics value reached a staggering 1.08 trillion yuan, with a foreign trade volume of 124.52 billion yuan, reflecting a robust and resilient economy.

Looking ahead to 2035, Linyi has set ambitious goals to transform itself into an international merchandise distribution center and a logistics hub. This objective is outlined in a provincial bulletin from Shandong's government, with a comprehensive framework of 22 measures introduced to encourage high-quality development within the trade city.

Expanding Trade Relations

In an effort to further optimize local opening-up mechanisms, Linyi has adopted a 'double center' development model which emphasizes the advancement of reforms across customs, logistics, finance, legal services, and risk management sectors. This initiative not only strengthens the flow of commerce but also fosters a conducive environment for expanding trade relations, especially with emerging markets.

In 2025, Linyi's foreign trade with Africa experienced a remarkable surge, growing by 109.3% from the previous year to reach 21.26 billion yuan. Similarly, the city is intensifying its engagement with markets such as those in the ASEAN region and the Middle East, which are poised to become critical engines of local foreign trade growth.

Digital Transformation and Trade Efficiency

To support the continued rise of its foreign trade, Linyi has launched several integrated service facilities. Early this February, the Linyi International Trade Center commenced operations, providing a consolidated location for customs, taxation, currency exchange, finance, and logistics services. This initiative lowers the barriers to digitization for local businesses, enhancing the efficiency of trade exchanges.

Additionally, Linyi regularly organizes overseas exhibitions and local events targeted at foreign traders to bolster bilateral trade and explore new transportation routes connecting Central Asia, Southeast Asia, and other key markets.

Conclusion

Linyi is harnessing its strategic initiative of openness to cultivate a thriving commercial landscape. The concerted efforts of the city in addressing the requirements of modern trade, including the embrace of digital solutions and the expansion of trade networks, solidify its path towards becoming a pivotal player in global commerce. As it stands, the city is well on its way to not only meeting its ambitious targets but also setting a benchmark for other cities in China aiming for international trade success.
