Metallica and Red Cross Join Forces to Collect Over 25,000 Blood Donations
Metallica and American Red Cross Unite for Lifesaving Blood Donations
In a groundbreaking partnership that has spanned nearly a year, Metallica and the American Red Cross have achieved remarkable results in their mission to save lives through blood donation. Launched in April 2025, this collaboration, backed by Metallica's foundation, All Within My Hands, has successfully collected over 25,000 blood donations across the United States and has expanded globally as the band toured. In total, they have encouraged approximately 40,000 donations worldwide.
The impact of this initiative has been profound, with thousands of Metallica fans stepping forward to donate blood. Notably, 16% of those who donated were first-time donors, showcasing a significant increase among younger individuals, particularly those aged 16 to 24. This trend reflects a growing commitment from Generation Z to engage in community service, particularly in light of the increasing need for blood donations due to various medical challenges.
Darren Irby, the Red Cross executive director for national partnerships, stated, "What Metallica and their fans have accomplished this year is truly monumental. They are inspiring people to give blood for the first time while also energizing teens and young adults about the donation process." The American Red Cross emphasizes that volunteer blood donors are the only source of blood available for patients facing surgeries, cancer treatments, and traumatic injuries, making each donation critically important.
The initiative began with blood drives at selected locations during the U.S. leg of Metallica's M72 World Tour and quickly expanded nationwide. Fans who donated blood or platelets at Red Cross blood drives between July 29, 2025, and February 28, 2026, were not only recognized for their contributions with limited-edition T-shirts but also entered for a chance to win an exclusive ESP Snakebyte guitar, designed in collaboration with the Red Cross and personally signed by all four band members.
Lars Ulrich, a founding member of Metallica, expressed gratitude towards the fans, saying, "A hallmark mission of the All Within My Hands Foundation is to support critical care and communities. We're thrilled the Metallica Family recognizes the importance of blood donation and rallied behind this lifesaving effort. Their enthusiasm has made a real difference, and we're honored to stand alongside them."
How to Get Involved in Blood Donation
Individuals interested in donating blood can easily make an appointment by downloading the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767), or using the Blood Donor Skill on Alexa-enabled devices. The Red Cross urgently needs all blood types to maintain a reliable supply for patients in need. Eligibility to donate requires individuals to be at least 17 years old in most states (16 with parental consent in some areas), weigh at least 110 pounds, and be generally healthy. Donors under 18 must also meet specific height and weight guidelines.
Moreover, those who wish to streamline their donation process can utilize RapidPass®, enabling them to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online on the day of their visit.
