Flux Steel Works to Revitalize Ohio Plant for Electrical Steel Production

Flux Steel Works has announced an ambitious plan to transform a 626,000-square-foot former specialty steel facility in Louisville, Ohio, into a state-of-the-art production site for grain-oriented electrical steel (GOES), a material critical for power transformers. The company secured the shuttered ATI steel plant in July 2026, five years after its closure, with renovations aimed at resuming commercial production by 2029.

With a goal to produce over 260,000 tons of GOES annually at full capacity, Flux Steel Works expects to rejuvenate the local economy by creating more than 200 skilled manufacturing jobs in Stark County. CEO Denny Wist emphasized the experience of their team, which boasts nearly a century of collective knowledge in the design and operation of America's largest electrical steel mills. He stated, "We are thrilled to be working in Ohio, among some of the best steelmakers in the world, and we will move quickly to ensure our customers receive the products they need."

The Importance of GOES in Power Transformer Production

Grain-oriented electrical steel is an indispensable component in the manufacturing of power transformers, enabling them to efficiently carry and direct magnetic flux. Despite its critical role in the electrical grid infrastructure, the United States currently relies on imports for the majority of its GOES supply, exposing the market to vulnerabilities, particularly for the high-permeability grades necessary for advanced transformer designs. Over the past five years, GOES prices have experienced a doubling trend.

As the shift towards sustainable energy solutions and the modernization of the electrical grid accelerates, transformer manufacturers are investing heavily in new capacity. This increasing demand is partly driven by the need to replace aging equipment and the growing focus on innovative electricity production and storage methods. The U.S. government has recognized the strategic importance of electrical core steel, with the President designating it as essential to national defense under the Defense Production Act in April 2026. This prioritization highlights the urgent need for a reliable domestic supply chain for GOES.
