Meiji Shokuhin's Initiative for Extended Chocolate Shelf Life

Meiji Co., Ltd. is taking a significant step towards reducing food waste by extending the shelf life of certain chocolate products. Particularly, popular items such as the "Meiji The Cacao Floral Cacao Latte" and various macadamia chocolates will see an increase in their shelf life by one to two months. This initiative will begin with chocolate produced from March 2026 onwards.

Background on Food Waste in Japan

Food waste has become a pressing issue in Japan, with estimates indicating that about 4.64 million tons of food are wasted annually, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. As a response to this challenge, the ministry has urged food companies to revise their practices regarding delivery deadlines and shelf life labeling.

Meiji's Commitment to Reducing Food Waste

Through its corporate philosophy. Meiji aims to contribute to solving social issues through its business activities. By using sensory evaluation and scientific analysis, the company has previously managed to extend the shelf life of several products. The current extension of chocolate shelf life aligns with this ongoing commitment.

The New Shelf Life Guidelines

In preparation for the extension, Meiji has revised its shelf life setting guidelines, which include reassessing safety factors and conducting new preservation tests. These measures confirmed that certain chocolates could maintain their taste and quality while extending their shelf life.

Specific Products Affected

From March 2026 onward, four products will see noteworthy changes in their shelf life:
  • - Meiji The Cacao Floral Cacao Latte (42g): The shelf life will extend from 12 months to 14 months.

Beginning in April 2026, the following macadamia products will also benefit:
  • - Macadamia Chocolate (9 pieces): Shelf life extended from 9 months to 10 months.
  • - Macadamia Chocolate Big Pack (115g): Shelf life extended from 9 months to 10 months.

Future Endeavors

Meiji Shokuhin reaffirms its dedication to promoting sustainable practices and reducing food waste. By extending the shelf life of these chocolate products, the company hopes to make a positive impact both on consumers and the environment, supporting a more sustainable society for all. As they continue to evaluate and improve their practices, consumers can feel confident in the quality and sustainability of Meiji chocolates.

With this decision, Meiji not only enhances the consumer experience but also plays an essential role in addressing one of today's significant social challenges: food waste reduction. As such, it sets a valuable example for other food producers to follow, furthering the conversation on sustainability in the food industry.
