Okayama University Hosts the Opening Ceremony for the Critical Language Scholarship Program 2026

On June 17, 2026, Okayama University hosted the opening ceremony of the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) program, a key initiative by the U.S. Department of State. This program, uniquely supported in Japan by Okayama University since 2019, allows top university students and graduates from across the United States to immerse themselves in Japanese language and culture.

Twenty-five participants arrived from various states in America to engage in this enriching experience. The ceremony took place at the Tsushima Campus in the university's International Exchange Hall. It began with a welcoming address by Masatomi Suga, Vice President in charge of Education, followed by remarks from University President Yasutomo Nasu. In his speech, President Nasu reflected on his own study abroad experience in the U.S., highlighting how such international exposure profoundly influences life and career paths. He conveyed his hopes that the program would be a fruitful journey for all attendees, encouraging them to actively enjoy their time in Okayama and engage with local culture and the university's student community.

Following the opening remarks, CLS students introduced themselves. Mia Escobar, a representative and Computer Science major at UC Berkeley, shared her personal connection to Japan, recounting her transformative experience with a host family during her previous exchange program. She expressed her aspirations for the summer, focusing on improving her language skills and enhancing cultural understanding. Escobar inspired her peers by mentioning the importance of overcoming challenges, stating that doing so opens new possibilities for personal growth.

Messages of encouragement from past CLS participants Gabe Baskin and Michelle Wong were shared via video, recounting their own growth during the program and motivating the current cohort.

The ceremony concluded with closing remarks from Akifumi Yokoi, Vice President for Global Engagement and CLS Executive Director, who emphasized the commitment to fostering international communication and understanding through educational exchanges.

The CLS program at Okayama University not only provides intensive Japanese language classes but also offers diverse learning opportunities such as language exchange activities with local students and community interaction. Over the next eight weeks, participants will enhance their language competence and deepen their comprehension of Japanese society and culture.
