Exciting Launch of Art Appraisal License Program by Shokokai Foundation

Shokokai Foundation's New Art Appraisal License Program

The Shokokai Foundation has officially introduced a groundbreaking certification program in Japan's antique art sector—the Art Appraiser License System. This initiative aims to systematically cultivate specialized knowledge in the evaluation and appraisal of artworks and antiques. With growing interest in Japanese art both domestically and internationally, there's an increasing need to address the challenges of counterfeit and ambiguous artworks circulating in the market.

As online auctions grow, so do issues surrounding forgeries and misrepresented art. This landscape can hinder the proper valuation of artworks and potentially undermine the integrity of all actors within the Japanese art community—artists, sellers, and buyers alike. Thus, the newly established license program is essential for ensuring fair and accurate evaluations in the art market.

The Art Appraiser License System encompasses a comprehensive educational program where applicants can learn everything from foundational knowledge about art to appraisal theories. Upon passing the certification exam, successful candidates will receive their official title of 'Art Appraiser,' secured under trademark registration No. 5615518. The program offers two separate tracks: a General Course and a Specialist Training Course, allowing for the recognition of skilled appraisers.

To assist in the preparation for this certification, Shokokai Foundation has also published an official textbook titled Art Appraiser License Text - Japanese Arts and Crafts, which is now available nationwide at bookstores and various e-commerce platforms. This textbook serves as an essential resource for those studying for the examination.

Scheduled for its initial assessment period from February 19 to March 25, 2026, registration for the Art Appraiser certification is currently open. This program is poised not only to attract art enthusiasts but also to pave the way for individuals aspiring to become professionals in the field of art.

In their announcement, the Shokokai Foundation stated, 'Through the dissemination of this program, we aim to enhance transparency in Japan’s art circulation market and establish proper value assessments that contribute to the sustainable development of our art culture.'
