A remarkable exhibition by bamboo artist Hitomi Abe is currently taking place at ESCAPERS AN OTHER WORLD in Tokyo. The exhibition, titled 'The Metaphoric Basket,' showcases her unique approach to bamboo craft, blending traditional techniques with contemporary artistry. Abe's work revolves around the theme of creating an interplay between the everyday and the extraordinary, encouraging viewers to appreciate the beauty in the subtleties of life.

As part of the exhibition, a special video revealing Abe’s creative process has been made available. This film captures her meticulous craftsmanship as she works with bamboo, highlighting her signature pieces such as the 'Object of Bamboo and Stone,' 'Brim,' 'Fringe,' and 'Box' series. Viewers can witness the transformation of material as the flexible yet resilient bamboo comes to life at the hands of the artist, embodying both motion and form in an elegant dance of creation.

Hitomi Abe deeply respects traditional crafting methods while innovating upon them. She believes that her art serves not only as decor but also adapts and evolves along with the user’s imagination and movements, thus attaining its completion through interaction. The current exhibition serves as a retrospective, marking ten years since the establishment of her workshop. Alongside her iconic works, it features new creations including a gourd-shaped object, affirming her commitment to blend heritage with innovation.

About Hitomi Abe

Hitomi Abe is a bamboo craft artist who studied textile design at Joshibi University of Art and Design. She was part of the founding team for the flagship store of MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA in France, after which she trained in bamboo craft at the Oita Bamboo Craft Training Support Center. Today, she works from her studio in Hiji Town, Oita Prefecture.
