Ogawa Flavors Launches Japan's First Vanilla Cultivation Project
In a groundbreaking initiative, Ogawa Flavors Co., Ltd., headquartered in Chuo-ku, Tokyo, has officially embarked on what is touted as Japan's first vanilla cultivation project spearheaded by a flavorist. Located in Shintomi Town, Miyazaki Prefecture, this ambitious endeavor aims to establish a sustainable, high-quality vanilla supply, addressing both local agricultural promotion and global market demands.
Partnership Agreement and Objectives
Since 2017, Ogawa Flavors has operated under the slogan “Sense Japan,” which encapsulates the desire to share the essence of Japan's agricultural products with the world through unique fragrances. In this context, the company signed a collaboration agreement with Miyazaki Prefecture in October 2021 to elevate the region's agricultural product brand through their distinct fragrances, working closely with local farms.
The aim of this venture consists of two key objectives:
1. To establish a sustainable supply chain for high-quality vanilla through a seamless process, from cultivation to curing, led by flavorists.
2. To position vanilla as a new agricultural crop in Shintomi Town, thus expanding its industrial potential.
Our ultimate goal is to create a premier vanilla brand that embodies quality, supply stability, and regional identity, serving as a role model for local revitalization through public-private partnerships.
The Importance of Cultivation in Miyazaki
Miyazaki was chosen for this project due to its rich agricultural history, particularly in subtropical fruits like mangoes. The region also boasts a favorable climate and soil conditions for new crop introductions. Vanilla, one of the most widely used flavor ingredients worldwide, predominantly comes from Madagascar, which supplies approximately 80% of the global vanilla production. However, supply reliability has been a challenge due to weather disturbances and environmental changes.
By establishing Miyazaki as a new source of vanilla, Ogawa Flavors aims to assure a consistent and high-quality flavor profile, benefiting both local growers and consumers.
Process of Vanilla Cultivation
Cultivating flavorful vanilla requires immense time and dedication. The blooming period occurs between April and May, during which pollination takes place manually. If successful, the plants develop green pods, which will be harvested the following January or February. The cultivation process includes enduring summer heat and winter cold, and over nine months, these pods accumulate essential flavor constituents.
Post-harvest, a crucial phase known as curing begins, lasting approximately eight months. This detailed process transforms the green pods into fragrant vanilla beans, culminating in a full flavor profile. Thus, from flowering to the final product, it takes around 18 months.
Ogawa Flavors is leveraging its expertise in fragrances to enhance the cultivation and curing processes, ensuring optimum flavor quality. This meticulous approach enables the team to analyze growing conditions tailored for aroma, promoting a continuous cycle of hypothesis, experimentation, and refinement.
Successful Cultivation Demonstration
As a part of this project, Ogawa Flavors is conducting a cultivation demonstration involving 40 ares and about 7,000 vanilla plants in Shintomi. The initial planting occurred in 2022, and despite various challenges, the plants have thrived and reached blooming in April 2026, marking significant progress for Miyazaki's vanilla production.
Celebrating the Blooming
To celebrate this milestone, the Vanilla Blooming Ceremony was held on May 1, 2026, attended by local officials, including Governor Toshitsugu Kono and Mayor Takushi Kojima. They participated in a ceremonial pollination, symbolizing the hard work and collaborative efforts behind this achievement. The ceremony reinforced community support and excitement for the future of vanilla cultivation in the region.
Comments from Local Leaders
- - Governor Kono: “This ceremony highlights the extensive efforts made since our partnership. The success of vanilla cultivation is significant for the entire region.”

Conclusion
With this initiative, Ogawa Flavors not only looks to secure the supply of high-quality vanilla but also hopes to position Miyazaki as a notable player in the global vanilla market. Through consistent innovation and community collaboration, they plan to generate a brand synonymous with Japanese excellence in agriculture, paving the way for future developments in the industry.
