Truth Initiative Introduces Enhanced Curriculum
As students return to school,
Truth Initiative has launched an updated version of its
Vaping: Know the Truth curriculum. Designed to address the growing landscape of addiction among youth, this updated resource features fresh lessons, videos, and materials focused on vaping, oral nicotine pouches, cigarettes, cannabis, and evolving usage patterns. The program is available for free to middle and high school students, aiming to educate them on these products while empowering them with essential refusal skills for real-world situations.
With approximately
1.8 million students participating in the course since its original launch in 2020,
Vaping: Know the Truth has established itself as a reliable resource for educators determined to prevent nicotine addiction among youth. Featuring an interactive digital format, the curriculum conveys critical facts about nicotine addiction, marketing strategies used by the industry, health risks, and the benefits of leading a nicotine-free life. The recent update enhances previous offerings with new multimedia content and design improvements, highlighting the vapes that are currently popular among youth, including the transition from older pod-style products to the increasingly common flavored disposable e-cigarettes.
Kathy Crosby, CEO of Truth Initiative, emphasized the urgency of the situation: "Young people are facing a rapidly evolving addiction landscape, encountering a wide range of substances in schools, online, and in popular culture. This refreshed curriculum meets that moment by giving educators and students clear, relevant, and engaging information about the full range of addiction risks facing young people today."
Recent national data indicate some positive trends yet highlight ongoing concerns regarding youth nicotine usage. A federal study based on the
National Youth Tobacco Survey found that youth e-cigarette use has declined to its lowest level in nearly a decade, but these products still lead in popularity among young users, with
1.44 million middle and high school students reported as current users. Additionally, among students who vape, over one-fourth do so daily, and more than
40% have vaped in
20 out of the last 30 days.
The data also reflects a troubling trend of poly-tobacco usage, with approximately
740,000 young individuals reporting the use of multiple tobacco products. Moreover, a study done by Truth Initiative revealed that over
45% of youths and nearly
53% of young adults who vaped recounted using at least one other type of tobacco product, be it cigarettes, nicotine pouches, or cigars.
In response to these changing patterns of use, the updated curriculum places a significant focus on oral nicotine pouches, recognizing their surge in popularity. Brands such as
Zyn, On!, and
Velo are currently among the fastest-growing segments in the nicotine market, with sales skyrocketing from
$146 million to
$539.5 million over a two-year span. While youth engagement with these pouches remains relatively low at this time, their rapid growth raises concerns about future usage trends, particularly as educators have noted increased sightings of these products on campuses.
The renewed curriculum also tackles the issue of cigarettes, particularly amid contemporary cultural anxiety surrounding their resurgence. Despite decades of successful anti-smoking efforts, cigarettes have begun reappearing in social media content, streaming services, fashion, and celebrity imagery. This pervasive visibility may influence perceptions, making smoking seem more normalized or acceptable among youth who may not fully grasp the associated health risks and dependence linked with nicotine.
Moreover, addiction risks are not isolated occurrences. Behaviors like nicotine vaping, cannabis usage, gaming, and gambling oscillate and can reinforce each other, suggesting that prevention and cessation strategies need adapting. The updated curriculum builds upon previously established lessons addressing cannabis use, a substance frequently used in conjunction with nicotine products among U.S. youth.
Vaping: Know the Truth is available through a partnership with
Everfi, a renowned provider of essential life-skills education, presented as a self-paced digital experience to educate students about the dangers linked to vaping and nicotine consumption. Importantly, the curriculum is intended as a constructive educational resource rather than a punitive discipline method. This initiative also facilitates support for students who already consume nicotine through its
EX Program, a free program designed in collaboration with
Mayo Clinic. This program includes personalized quit strategies, interactive messaging, and a supportive online community aimed at helping individuals refrain from nicotine use, encompassing e-cigarettes, cigarettes, and oral nicotine pouches.
Evidence from Research by Truth Initiative confirms that participation in
Vaping: Know the Truth enhances students' understanding of e-cigarettes and nicotine addiction. A study encompassing more than
100,000 middle and high school attendees found a notable
15% increase in their knowledge about e-cigarettes once they completed the course.
Crosby accentuated the importance of providing up-to-date resources for educators: "With updated lessons, new videos, and a fresh design, Vaping: Know the Truth equips schools with a free, engaging tool that helps students comprehend the risks they encounter today while protecting themselves from addiction. For students already using nicotine, the curriculum connects them with free quitting resources, making it clear that they do not need to navigate this journey alone."
