NEO Awa Odori Group 'Takarabune' Completes Central America Tour Celebrating 90 Years of Diplomatic Relations

NEO Awa Odori Group 'Takarabune' Completes Tour in Central America

The NEO Awa Odori group, Takarabune, operated by Appcheez Inc., recently finished a remarkable 25-day cultural exchange tour across six Central American countries: Panama, Guatemala, Belize, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and El Salvador. This tour was part of the official commemorative events for the 90th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Central America, recognized as the 'Japan-Central America Exchange Year'.

From November 9 to December 3, 2025, the group performed a total of 26 shows, captivating over 15,000 spectators and participants with the unique rhythms of Awa Odori, which is a traditional Japanese dance.

A Creative Cultural Exchange

The tour received support from the Japan Foundation's Overseas Dispatch Program and involved collaboration with various cultural institutions such as ministries of culture, local governments, universities, and cultural bodies from the visited countries. The involvement of Japanese embassies abroad helped to enrich the cultural exchanges, showcasing performances at significant venues like the National Theater, the National Cultural Palace, and during Central America's largest celebration, the San Miguel Carnival.

This initiative was not only about performing but also about building relationships through culture. Takarabune redefined Awa Odori by integrating modern musical elements and participatory frameworks, making it a universal experience that transcended language barriers.

A Reflection on the Tour

Wataru Yonezawa, leader of Takarabune, expressed pride in being able to perform once again in Central America during such a significant anniversary. He affirmed that the spirit of Awa Odori, capturing the joy of diverse cultures coming together, is a shared value that transcends borders.

Takarabune, which translates to 'Treasure Ship', has taken on a mission to present and innovate Awa Odori as a contemporary Japanese performing art since its inception in 1995. With past engagements in major events such as Japan Expo Paris and tours across various countries, Takarabune continues to elevate Japanese culture on a global stage while collaborating across artistic domains.
