Discover the Jobs of Edo: Summer Exhibition at Minato City Local History Museum
The Minato City Local History Museum is set to host an intriguing summer exhibition titled "Edo no Shigoto Guide - Working by the Sea and Trading in Towns and Samurai Residences" from July 18 to September 23. This event aims to unveil the various occupations present during the Edo period, particularly in the port area that connected Kyoto and Osaka to Edo via the Tōkaidō.
A Glimpse into Edo's Working Life
In the Edo era, the bustling port zones were home to people engaged in diverse professions. Fishermen, laborers transporting goods on boats and oxen, and employees at tea houses catering to travelers formed an integral part of daily life. The exhibition not only highlights these occupations but also provides insights into those who served the samurai class.
Visitors will be able to explore historical ukiyo-e prints and ancient documents that depict working individuals in their environments. This immersive look into the past allows attendees to compare these historical jobs with those existing today, some of which have evolved, while others have faded from existence.
