Hixny Partners with New York State to Enhance Behavioral Health Data Access for Providers
Collaboration Enhancing Access to Behavioral Health Data
In a significant move towards improving mental health services in New York, Hixny, the state’s healthcare information exchange, has teamed up with the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) to enhance accessibility to behavioral health data. Through the integration of the Psychiatric Services and Clinical Knowledge Enhancement System (PSYCKES) with Hixny's community health record, providers can now directly access behavioral health information, paving the way for better-informed clinical decision-making and holistic patient care.
Seamless Integration for Providers
The integration of PSYCKES data into Hixny's application means healthcare providers no longer need to access separate systems to retrieve crucial behavioral health insights. Instead, relevant PSYCKES data appears automatically in the patient's community health record within Hixny, ensuring a comprehensive view of the individual’s health status. This feature is vital, especially when behavioral health considerations play a key role in developing effective treatment plans.
Hixny’s platform utilizes SMART on FHIR technology, which ensures compatibility with various Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems in use, including major players like Athena, Cerner, Epic, and Medent. The convenience offered by this integration allows providers to access important behavioral health history and treatment data effortlessly, right at their fingertips, enabling more informed discussions and decisions regarding patient care.
Commitment to Improved Care Quality
Mark McKinney, CEO of Hixny, expressed the organization’s dedication to ensuring that critical data is readily available when it matters most. He stated, "This collaboration with the Office of Mental Health reflects our shared commitment to putting the right information in front of providers at the right moment." This integration exemplifies the necessity of incorporating behavioral health data into routine clinical practices, facilitating informed care decisions that support the well-being of patients.
OMH Commissioner Dr. Ann Sullivan added, "Streamlining secure access to PSYCKES behavioral health data into Hixny's clinical system will help to break down the silos between general medical and behavioral health care services." This initiative underscores the importance of adopting a person-centered care approach, which is essential for holistic treatment of patients.
Access and Benefits of PSYCKES Data
The access to PSYCKES data via Hixny is made available to all eligible users in participating organizations, adhering to the privacy and consent policies governing protected health information. Providers are only allowed to access records for patients with whom they have a treatment relationship, ensuring that confidentiality is maintained.
In emergencies or with consent, providers can quickly identify behavioral health care coordinators and vital contacts associated with various care management programs. This feature enhances the efficiency of crisis management, allowing seamless coordination of care efforts.
The PSYCKES system not only flags adults and children with complex behavioral health needs but also identifies those eligible for intensive outpatient services. Furthermore, commencing in June, additional notifications will alert providers regarding individuals who need to recertify for Medicaid, ensuring continued access to important healthcare services.
Enhancing Clinical Decision Support
Beyond the integration of PSYCKES, Hixny provides various clinical decision support features that aid healthcare providers, including reminders for proactive care measures such as cancer screenings and blood pressure monitoring. These features, along with a social needs screening tool validated by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), equip providers with the necessary resources to deliver high-quality, timely care aligned with New York State's health initiatives.
Future Expansion
Given the successful establishment of PSYCKES integration through this partnership, the Office of Mental Health plans to activate similar integrations with other interested health information exchange entities throughout New York State, fostering a more interconnected healthcare network.
