Petrokimia Gresik Unveils Energy Transition Strategy for 2024-2030 at COP29

Petrokimia Gresik Presents Energy Transition Plan for 2024-2030 at COP29

On November 19, 2024, during the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, Petrokimia Gresik, a key player in agro-industrial solutions and part of the Pupuk Indonesia group, showcased its ambitious energy transition program for the years 2024 to 2030. This initiative aligns with global efforts aimed at addressing pressing decarbonization challenges.

During his presentation, Dwi Satriyo Annurogo, the president of Petrokimia Gresik, emphasized the company’s long-standing commitment to decarbonization and its alignment with the objectives of Pupuk Indonesia. Annurogo noted that these efforts also resonate with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto's directive to achieve national food security and reach net-zero emissions (NZE) by 2060. He stated, "Petrokimia Gresik has been proactive in enhancing its decarbonization program as we strive to lead in the green industry."

Key Initiatives in the Energy Transition Program

The energy transition strategy outlined for the year 2024 involves significant changes, including the conversion of the Phonska V plant's furnace and burner systems from coal to natural gas. Additionally, Petrokimia Gresik is expanding its fleet of electric vehicles, which currently includes 180 electric motorcycles and 8 electric cars, all supported by dedicated charging infrastructure. This year, the company has also introduced two electric forklifts and one electric wheel loader, which together are expected to reduce emissions by an impressive 22%.

Looking further into the roadmap for decarbonization from 2025 to 2030, the company plans several critical developments. This includes converting the furnaces in the Phonska IV plant from coal to natural gas and transitioning heating processes in the sulfuric acid plant from oil to gas. The roadmap also involves co-firing with biomass and the development of a hybrid eco-friendly ammonia plant, along with a calcined soda plant and other key initiatives.

Satriyo underscored that these decarbonization initiatives reflect the principles of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and ensure compliance with emissions regulations. The planned consistent efforts from 2025 to 2030 are projected to yield substantial outcomes, with an expected total emission reduction of approximately 31.89%. These actions are part of the broader vision to minimize carbon emissions to only 41,000 tons by 2060, significantly lower than the maximum target of 132,000 tons set in the NZE program.

Commitment to Sustainable Development

The energy transition program and the extensive roadmap for decarbonization signify Petrokimia Gresik's unwavering commitment to sustainable industrial practices. As the company strives to become a leader in green technology, it continues to innovate and implement effective strategies that contribute to global sustainability efforts.

In summary, Petrokimia Gresik's presentation at COP29 has shed light on its strategic approach to achieving significant reductions in carbon emissions through dedicated energy transitions. It not only showcases the company's responsiveness to environmental challenges but also emphasizes the alignment of corporate goals with national and global sustainability mandates.

With these initiatives, Petrokimia Gresik is set to play a vital role in the future of sustainable agro-industrial operations, ensuring a greener future for Indonesia and beyond.
