The Essence of Okuizumo Town
Located in Shimane Prefecture, Okuizumo Town is surrounded by lush nature and is situated upstream of the "Hiigawa" river, a first-class river. This town is steeped in history, featuring prominently in ancient texts like the "Nihon Shoki" and the "Kojiki," particularly known as the site where the Yamata no Orochi was defeated. According to the Izumo Province Fudoki, compiled in 733 AD, iron was produced here using the traditional tatara method.
Since at least the early Edo period, the town utilized a mining technique called "tetsuana nagashi" that involved flowing water to extract iron from the mountains, subsequently regenerating the sandy surfaces into terraced rice fields. This has led to a flourishing agricultural system interlinked with iron production, rice farming, beef cattle, and forestry. In August 2023, the FAO recognized this unique farming system as a "Globally Important Agricultural Heritage."
The sustainable farming practices passed down through generations have allowed for the cultivation of Nitamai rice, Okuizumo beef, local soba, and various mushrooms, showcasing rich biodiversity and agricultural culture, complemented by stunning terraced landscapes.
