UN Global Compact Launches Country Network Rwanda

On May 15, 2026, the UN Global Compact officially announced the establishment of the Country Network Rwanda, a pivotal initiative aimed at enhancing the role of the private sector in sustainable development across Africa. This initiative, unwrapped during the Africa CEO Forum, marks a significant commitment by businesses, governmental representatives, and UN members to a shared vision of responsible and inclusive economic growth.

Objective of the Country Network Rwanda

The newly formed Rwandan Country Network serves as a national platform designed to support businesses in aligning their operational strategies with the UN Global Compact's Ten Principles, focusing on human rights, labor standards, environmental stewardship, and anti-corruption measures. The Network aims to spearhead the nation’s progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ensuring that the economic transformation Rwanda is experiencing is accompanied by strong governance, transparency, and resilience.

During the launch event, the governance structure for Network Rwanda was presented, including its inaugural Board of Directors and Secretariat. Emulating the global network model of the UN Global Compact, which encompasses over 60 Country Networks around the world, this structure will guide the Network's independent operations, assist participating companies, and promote collective action throughout Rwanda's business ecosystem.

Sanda Ojiambo, CEO and Executive Director of the UN Global Compact, highlighted the critical role of a resilient and sustainable private sector in fostering economic growth. She stated, "Rwanda's growth narrative is driven by ambition and innovation, and the private sector plays a vital role in ensuring that this growth aligns with the country's national goals and sustainable objectives. The inception of the Country Network Rwanda is about job creation, market building, and economic development propelled by strong private sector involvement. Through this Network, we aim to create a platform for businesses to not only set targets but also enact measurable impacts."

The launch event laid out a clear roadmap for the Network's initial activities, emphasizing the importance of practical implementation, solidifying partnerships with governmental and developmental bodies, and enabling companies to achieve tangible results in key SDG areas. This framework seeks to elevate Rwanda's existing development priorities, particularly emphasizing sustainability in operational practices.

Government's Response

Rwanda's Minister of Trade and Industry, Prudence Sebahizi, expressed his support for the initiative, recognizing it as a timely measure to bolster the nation’s development objectives. "Considering that the private sector accounts for about 90% of our workforce, its role as the engine of Rwanda's economy cannot be overstated," articulated Sebahizi. He stressed that for the growth to effect real transformation, it must be anchored in responsibility and innovation. He called on industries, particularly in sectors like mining, to embrace sustainable practices that align with global standards for environmental and human rights considerations.

Bridging Global Standards with Local Contexts

Several leaders from the private sector acknowledged the critical nature of establishing platforms that integrate global sustainability standards with local business conditions. This connection enables companies to scale their impact while maintaining a competitive edge. Monzer Ali, CEO of MTN Rwandacell PLC, emphasized that effective leadership necessitates the readiness to make challenging yet essential decisions today to pave the way for a sustainable future. He remarked, "Integrating sustainability principles isn’t merely about compliance; it’s about demonstrating the courage to innovate and lead in a responsible manner. The UN Global Compact serves as the framework we require to translate that courage into measurable progress for all Rwandans."

With the establishment of the Country Network Rwanda, the initiative aligns itself alongside eleven other African networks, highlighting that responsible business practices not only mitigate risks but also unlock sustainable economic opportunities across the continent.
