A Modern Revival of Akimoto Matsushige's "Chikamatsu Shinjyu Monogatari" at KAAT

A Modern Revival of a Timeless Classic

This coming October, the KAAT Kanagawa Arts Theatre will be the venue for a contemporary adaptation of Akimoto Matsushige's masterpiece, "Chikamatsu Shinjyu Monogatari." Since its premiere in 1979, this play has secured its position in theatrical history, exploring themes of love and tragedy that resonate through the ages.

Creative Team Behind the Revival

The production is brought to life by the creative minds at CCCreation, with Ryō Horikoshi from Ayame Juhachiban taking on the directorial role. In a unique blend of modern visuals and classical performance styles, the play is set to cross genres and eras, striking a chord with today’s audience. Horikoshi has a reputation for elevating classical structures into modern theater, a skill that has been praised in his previous collaborations with CCCreation on works such as "Chincho Ume," "Shiroari," and "Jochu-tachi."

This production promises to infuse the intricate structure of Akimoto's script with raw emotions and an authentic atmosphere, shedding light on the universal human experiences of love and suffering.

Musical Accompaniment and Choreography

The music direction is in the capable hands of Noh Yoshida, who will create a backdrop of live music and sound throughout the performance. Furthermore, Hiroichi Tatekata from THE CONVOY SHOW adds his expertise in choreography and staging, bringing a unique rhythm and depth to the physical expressions on stage. The production aims to deliver a sensory experience, inviting audiences to engage with both sight and sound in a profound manner.
