DNA and Google Cloud Team Up to Enhance Telecommunications Services and Innovation in Finland

DNA Expands Collaboration with Google Cloud

In a significant advance in digital transformation, DNA Plc, a prominent telecommunications provider based in Finland and a subsidiary of Telenor Group, has announced a strategic collaboration with Google Cloud. This partnership aims to speed up DNA's transition to cloud solutions, ultimately enhancing the speed and reliability of services rendered to its customers. The ambition is to gradually shift the entirety of DNA's on-premise operations to the Google Cloud environment as part of a well-defined cloud-first strategy.

The Shift to Google Cloud

This strategic agreement between DNA and Google Cloud reflects the changing dynamics of the telecom industry, where companies like DNA are required to comply with several stringent regulations regarding data management. One such requirement is that data must reside within Finland's territory. To address this, DNA integrates the Google Distributed Cloud platform, which will facilitate hosting key infrastructure elements within local data centers while also allowing a portion of its data to be stored at Google Cloud's data center located in Hamina, Finland. This setup not only complies with local regulations but can lead to a substantial reduction in DNA's data center operations and costs.

A Leap Towards Innovation

The partnership builds on an earlier collaboration between Google Cloud and Telenor Group, where DNA began adopting Google Cloud's robust data and analytics tools aimed at enhancing customer, marketing, and network analytics. DNA has reported that leveraging Google's BigQuery for data orchestration significantly boosted the performance of its analytics at a substantially lower cost than prior resources. According to Jussi Tolvanen, CEO of DNA Plc, this move will not only increase operational adaptability but also maintain the company’s competitive edge in delivering connectivity to a growing customer base.

“To achieve greater operational efficiency, we must adopt new technologies rapidly. The cloud transformation will establish new levels of speed and innovation,” said Jussi Tolvanen.

Future Capacity and Service Enhancement

With the current agreement, DNA is poised to develop new cloud-native services in collaboration with Google Cloud. These innovations will integrate insights derived from the data platform, facilitating a greater understanding of customer preferences. As a result, DNA is expected to provide more customized solutions for both consumer and enterprise markets.

The innovative force behind this collaboration also includes Google Cloud’s open-source solutions like the Google Kubernetes Engine, which is designed to expedite DNA's transition while simultaneously enhancing the services offered to customers. Markus Hongisto, Country Manager for Google Cloud Finland, expressed enthusiasm about this partnership, emphasizing their shared goal of empowering Finnish businesses and consumers with secure digital experiences. He noted,

“By focusing on data residency, compliance, and security, we find opportunities that foster rapid innovation.”

Transition Timeline

DNA plans to kickstart the cloud transformation process by migrating over 100 essential applications to Google Cloud later this year, marking a pivotal step in their technological evolution.
