GEAPP and AFD Group Partner to Empower African Financial Institutions for Clean Energy Access
Collaboration for Sustainable Energy in Africa
In a groundbreaking initiative announced at the Finance in Common Summit, the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) has joined forces with the Agence Française de Développement (AFD Group) to mobilize up to $5 million in technical assistance aimed at bolstering local financial institutions throughout Africa. This partnership is set to play a pivotal role in enhancing the capacity of African development banks and private financial institutions to support clean energy projects, thereby facilitating the wider access needed for sustainable and affordable electricity.
Mission 300 and Its Implications
This collaboration is a direct response to the increasing momentum behind Mission 300, an ambitious target set forth by the World Bank and African Development Bank. The goal is to provide affordable and sustainable electricity access to 300 million people in Africa by 2030. Fulfilling this mission requires not just innovative technology but also a substantial increase in financial resources to implement these technical solutions.
Despite the availability of technologies such as off-grid solutions and national grid extensions, the primary challenge remains the lack of sufficient financing. Financial institutions at both the regional and national levels are crucial in unlocking these solutions. By leveraging local expertise, they help reduce exposure to foreign exchange risks and provide necessary capital that can drive innovative business models.
Strengthening Financial Institutions
The GEAPP and AFD Group alliance seeks to address the current financing gap by equipping African financial institutions with the necessary tools and support. This includes assistance in technical, financial, legal, environmental, and social dimensions, which collectively aim to enhance the institutions’ readiness to finance sustainable development projects. This approach will also improve their capacity to assess new investments and manage portfolios effectively.
One key component of the initiative is the distribution of a pilot envelope of $1.3 million in technical assistance grants from GEAPP, in conjunction with lines of credit from AFD Group. This blend of technical and financial support is designed to strengthen Africa’s public development banks (PDBs) and private financial institutions' capabilities to engage in long-term financing and investment in clean energy technologies.
The Role of AFD Group
AFD Group's extensive experience in financing projects that promote energy access and resilience underscores this partnership. With a focus on financing local initiatives and supporting climate adaptation and mitigation projects, AFD Group has championed various programs, including the Sunref program, designed to provide local banks and businesses with resources for transitioning towards ecological sustainability.
As part of this collaboration, AFD Group’s ongoing commitment includes a goal of mobilizing more stakeholders to bolster financial systems in support of clean energy access. Their long-term strategy also revolves around promoting policies and practices that align with climate resilience and sustainable economic growth.
Conclusion: A New Dawn for Energy Access
The partnership between GEAPP and AFD Group signifies a larger movement toward sustainable energy solutions in Africa. By combining philanthropic support with institutional backing, the initiative aims to accelerate clean energy access, create job opportunities, and foster inclusive economic growth in areas historically underserved by traditional financial models.
As the two organizations look to implement this partnership, they emphasize a collaborative approach to uncovering innovative financing solutions that meet the unique needs of African communities. With their combined expertise and resources, they are set to make significant strides toward meeting Mission 300 goals and ultimately achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goal 7—ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all.
