Mercuria and Continental Resources Join Forces for New Power Plant in Texas
In a significant move towards enhancing energy independence in the United States, two major players from the energy sector, Mercuria Americas and Continental Resources, have announced their partnership to develop the Pecos Power Plant. This ambitious project will establish a 452 MW gas-fired power facility located in Pecos, Texas. The collaboration between these two companies reflects a common vision to expand domestic power generation capabilities while meeting the surging demand for reliable energy in the ERCOT grid.
Mercuria Americas, which is a crucial component of one of the world’s top independent energy and commodity groups, is spearheading the development of this project. Construction work on the Pecos Power Plant commenced in September 2025, with a goal to launch commercial operations by 2027. With the strategic partnership of Continental Resources, which is well-known for its extensive operations in the Permian Basin, the project stands to benefit from a blend of operational expertise and local knowledge.
Daniel Jaeggi, the Co-Founder and President of Mercuria Energy, expressed confidence in the partnership, stating, "When we sought a partner for our new gas-fired generation initiative, Continental was a clear and obvious choice. Their vision for the American energy landscape, coupled with a proven track record of responsible production, aligns perfectly with our project goals."
Moreover, Harold Hamm, the Founder and Chairman Emeritus of Continental Resources, emphasized the importance of adapting to the growing energy demands in America. He remarked, "The future of American energy is not just confined to extraction; it stretches all the way to the power grid. As electricity demand skyrockets from various sectors including data centers and advanced manufacturing, our obligation is to provide affordable and reliable power. Our collaboration with Mercuria allows us to utilize our abundant natural resources in a newly impactful way, generating the dependable energy that will drive our nation's growth."
The Pecos Power Plant is designed to feature 24 reciprocating internal combustion engines, which will provide a reliable and flexible power generation solution. This setup is crucial for maintaining grid stability and complementing existing renewable energy resources. Brian Falik, the President of Mercuria Americas, added, "With the electricity generated from the Pecos Power Plant, we will enhance the reliability and dispatchability of power supplied to the Texas grid at critical times, aiding in the balance of intermittent renewable resources and ensuring a resilient power infrastructure."
Continental's strategy of integrating their world-class resource portfolio with the increasing demand for reliable power represents a natural evolution for the company. Doug Lawler, President and CEO of Continental Resources, stated, "As power demands rise and the energy sector continues to evolve, our partnership with Mercuria signifies our commitment to not only delivering dependable power but also creating long-term value for local communities."
The Pecos Power Plant initiative is expected to lead to the creation of hundreds of construction jobs during the building phase, while also providing skilled positions once operational. Ultimately, this project is anticipated to generate enough electricity to service approximately 200,000 homes, thereby playing a vital role in addressing Texas's growing energy needs.
