Virginia American Water Expands Its Footprint

On June 1, 2026, Virginia American Water, a prominent subsidiary of American Water Works Company, Inc. (NYSE: AWK), announced a significant milestone with the completion of its acquisition of the Colchester Utilities wastewater system. This strategic move, part of the broader Nexus Water Group systems acquisition, marks a notable enhancement in service capabilities and customer reach for the utility.

The acquisition adds approximately 170 indirect wastewater customer connections to Virginia American Water’s existing client base, along with one significant customer. Importantly, two employees from Colchester Utilities will also join the Virginia American Water team, ensuring continuity and expertise in service delivery. Laura Runkle, President of Virginia American Water, expressed the company’s enthusiasm, stating, "On behalf of our entire team, we are delighted to welcome our new customers and new employees to the Virginia American Water family."

Runkle emphasized the company’s commitment to ensuring a seamless transition for the newly acquired customers, leveraging the local knowledge and experience of the team from Colchester Utilities. The successful acquisition was finalized following the necessary regulatory approvals secured by May 21, 2026.
